I have been getting the impression just lately that more is astir than reinforcing our Iraq effort. I remember when we started moving things around Iraq (both times, come to think of it), people wondered if it was just a bluff. I hope this is for real. President Bush has clearly described the "gathering threat" and the need to act, and he does tend to follow up on what he says.

You mean the great military power that barely managed to hold the Iraqi military at bay for 10 yrs? The military we took out in mere hours? That Iran?

There is a world of difference between occupying a nation and simply reducing their fighting capacity to nothing. No sticky insurgent (terrorist) concerns involved there - at least not straight up.

And as far as retaliation through offspring organizations: 1. who will finance/train them then? 2. None of them would be able to claim that we are a paper tiger after THAT. That's bad for recruiting, not good. 3. It's not like they aren't expending maximum effort now. 4. At least as much of the Muslim World would be relieved as would get angry. 5. Their version of respect has nothing to do with diplomacy. they would respect us MORE. 6. Caligula: let them hate us so long as they fear us more.

If I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times, the pentagon, State Dept., and every single gov't group that had any Clinton leftovers should have been purged on Inauguration Day 2001.

I want to see Cheney himself string up the leak this time. Why aren't leakers treated the same as those who commit treason?

And who would that be other than Israel? They are surrounded by American troops to their west and east. Syria would drop Iran as quickly as you can say BOOM. They want no part of this, trust me. The only protesting would come from Russia and China.

Back to the story... I think the only reason this story was leaked is to pressure the UN (and the new US Congress) to impose more sanctions against Israel.

But saying that would make the story less panicky, and journalism, after all, is primarily about fanning as many negative emotions as possible (and it sells!).

Sanctions on Israel for doing what is necessary to preserve itself. Yeah, that's a great idea. Iran pursues weapons of mass destruction and the UN does nothing about it. The UN response is to punish Israel. This does not compute.

The UN is worthless. They are UN-necessary. We should should get the US out of the UN and kick them out of this country. Send them to Haiti or some other 3rd world country.

The people of Iran have had almost thirty years to remove the mullahs and their ilk. In the end, you have to hold the people of a nation responsible for the actions of their leaders. It's time for Eternal Persia to die.

Iran's nuclear facilities Germanys industrial facilities are distributed, hidden, and buried deep. Nothing short of a full scale invasion and an occupation lasting some months could comprehensively destroy the bulk of them. The only other way to stop Iran getting nukes Germany would be to lay waste the cities, killing the people who work in the facilities and destroying the industrial base that makes that work possible. Killing, into the bargain, hundreds of thousands if not millions of civilians who didn't {actually} vote for Ahmadinejad Hitler.
