Marine Sees Himself On News - One Year After Combat
UCV ^ | 12-30-06 | C. Dickson

Posted on 12/30/2006 11:46:43 PM PST by Flora McDonald

Ted Dickson, at 22, is now a freshman in college and enjoying every minute of it. Perhaps a little too much his parents think, but after four years in the Marines, the newly discharged Corporal and newly enlisted Guardsman was, for the moment, focused on his abs at Gold's Gym.

And then it happened, looking up, he saw himself with his Fire Team back on the streets of Husayba in Anbar Province, Iraq. It was November of 2005 and there they were. Adrenalin pumping, climbing over walls, battering down doors, and taking the town one house at a time.

The CNN news reader spoke over the video a few more seconds and it was over. There was still time to get on the treadmill before heading home for supper on this Friday December 29, 2006.

Ted and 3/6 I Co. 1st Plt. are in the CNN news clip "Iraq Troop Increase?" starting at 1:08 through 1:30.

For those curious as to why footage that old was used, this Hugh Hewitt audio T.F. Boggs, Bill Roggio, Froggy Ruminations may shed some light. Start at 10:32.

Thought you might like to read this. He just grinned and brushed it off when he told me the story. I stayed up all night to track down the video.

You didn't ping me? :( Found it anyway. So Ted went over to the "dark side" and joined the Guard, eh :)

I'll post it for all to see when I know for sure, but sometime in the first 10 days of Jan or so, CNN will air a special on Anderson Cooper 360 called "Ambush at the River of Secrets". It's about the night of 1/26/2005 and our four Marines from 4th CEB Charlie Company.

Hi freema! This happened to my son while he was working out at the gym the other day. After he told us about it and we found the video we got to wondering why they had to go back a year to pull archived footage when there has been so much going in Iraq since then. Lack of imbeds maybe?

Anyway, he got a kick out of it coming out of the blue like it did.

It's not uncommon for the news to use stock footage. It really depends on what CNN said about the footage, or if it was just video used with voice over talking about increased troop levels.

It's always revealing to men under arms to recognize that if somebody wants to understand what is going on in a theater of war, frequently the first thing to consider is discounting everything in the press.

IMHO, there is a tremendous demand for trustworthy news. This demand obviously isn't being met considering reports such as this. I don;t expect it to happen anytime soon considering all the news cable channels have the audacity to play news 'reruns'.

I guess CNN wanted to show raid footage without leaving the green zone. Absolutely pathetic.

In fairness to CNN, they were just using the footage as a background visual in this instance. My point was, why not something more recent?

However, last year, CNN used footage of my son's platoon that involved injured civilians over and over when reporting on Operation Steel Curtain. It was very deceptive and definitely anti-troops propaganda.

You cannot watch CNN and safely assume that the video they use matches the report they are reading.

How weird was it, for him!!! "Lack of imbeds" made me LMAO for some reason! Thank God for small favors, I think? I don't want them sumbitches anywhere near my troops, isn't that awful.

We give thanks to HIM for allowing your son and so many in similiar situations to return whole in body and spirit to this great Republic. May they that have so ably served now be given opportunities to achieve what they desire in life, whether it be with the Corps. or otherwise.

"It's not uncommon for the news to use stock footage."

It's common in lots of video. My favorite is the sunrise/sunset run in reverse.

Know how to tell the difference?

The sun always rises and sets at an angle from left to right. Anytime you see the sun rising or setting from right to left, it's a clip being run in reverse.

Watch for it. You'll be surprised how often it's done.
