Check your calender. Winter doesn't start for two weeks after their expedition. In fact, their trip is being accomplished in late Fall.

If you're only looking at a calendar you're correct, but in the "real" mountains west of the Mississippi the winter starts in September when the snow pack starts to build.

Check the wording in my post #12. I'm fully aware winter doesn't begin until December 21/22. Winter weather on Mt. Hood occurs long before the winter solstice. That is why I specifically stated "Winter weather season".
