Don't let them cut on you if you can stand it.

Try substituting two Ibuprofen and two Acetominiphen for the narcotics. My buddy is a implant dentist and has found that the synergistic interaction of these two is as effective as the narcotic. Don't over do the acetominiphen...

This combination has helped my very bad back on its worst days.

about 12 yrs ago i ruptured a disc in my lower back.

i went to a good chiroprator, tried pain killers and muscle
relaxants of all sorts...nothing helped. in excruciating
pain i went to the er in the middle of the night. they
referred me to a neurologist, not an orthopedist. within a
week the pressure on my spine had cut off all feeling down
my left leg. i could barely stay still for the mri. i had
laser surgery the next day. no stitches, no blood, etc. in
and out of the hospital in two days and only a 4 week
recovery. without that surgery i would probably have
permanent nerve damage and i would not be able to walk
on my own now.

i so hope the wc folks decide therapy is not working so you
can get an mri done soon.

Assuming you do not actually have a damaged disk, a good chiropractor should be able to fix it.

My step-mother had horrible siatica, and all of the medical treatments at best masked the pain. Chiropractic treatments gave relief immediately and completely cured the problem over the course of three months.

Find a good honest chiropractor, who doesn't claim to be able to cure all ills by adjusting your skeleton.

I blew out my L5 about 3 years ago, same deal with sciatic nerve problems and of course spasms in my back. I had great results from surgery, a microscopic discectomy

It worked out great, I haven't had any problems since and regained full functionality.

I didn't bother with chiropracters or anything like that.

I feel your pain!

Our 42nd President found that he received much relief from pain if he had a young intern working on his unit in the oral office!

Maybe that's the ticket! Along with some ice on it!

Are you taking nutritional supplements. For instance, calcium is great for leg cramps. You need Vit E, C, Glucosamine may help the leg. There are a ton of things that might help. How about acupuncture?

I wouldn't go that far.

A couple of gin and tonics should suffice.

Add a cup of coffee and a square of bakers chocolate to that combination of ibuprofen and acetominiphen and it works even better.

This sounds exactly like the treatment I was a human Guinea pig for, many moons ago. After weeks of no relief unless I was medically knocked out I was sent to the Pain Control Clinic at Loma Linda Hospital in CA where I received the treatment you described and after about 30-45 minutes received instant relief. It was explained that it was something to do with the Periformis[sp] muscle that was pinching the sciatic nerve.[or caused it to be pinched - don't remember which] To this day I've only had a couple of twinges which have been relieved with exercises and stretching procedures.

I'm lucky enough to have never experienced anything like what you have but I couldn't help but notice that you're in Connecticut.

Given that fact, you're within driving distance of several of the finest hospitals in the world...two of which are specifically known for their expertise in Orthopedics. Those two are New England Baptist Hospital in Boston and the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan. Also,I can't imagine the Orthopedics Department at Yale New Haven Hospital being anything less than excellent.

If you haven't already consulted one of those hospitals I'd encourage you to consider it.

I agree..a few glasses of wine gets me right almost every time

Mixing booze, morphine derivatives and tranquilizers is almost always a bad idea.

Try a good chiropractor.

If your lower back was injured from a "spearing" action as in a thrust to the lower back, then the problem takes a lot of luck. If it is just from the disk pivoting then a chiropractor can be of immense help. The other problem is age and deterioration of the intravertebral disks.

Also, if you have a major sports team in your area, look up a sports medicine practitioner. They are experts with these types of injuries.

Best of luck. I've been there.

The pain is likely to be foremost on your mind, but the right foot being asleep for a week is not something you should ignore.

You did not mention anything about the diagnostic testing that has been done. Blood/urine tests? MRI or CT scan?

In other words, are you sure about the diagnosis? Your symptoms could be several things other than a slipped disk.

Freepmail me if you want to discuss this further.
