Actually, PJ, I know a little bit about Hoyer, since I was living in the Maryland district he hails from at the time he was elevated to the House. Ol' Steny did it the old-fashioned way: by stepping on the prone body of a comatose woman, Congresswoman Gladys Noon Spellman. She was felled by a stroke, and before you could say "Jack Murtha's ethics," Steny saw the opportunity for a little poltical promotion, Maryland style.
Spellman's husband had worked closely with Spellman during her political life, and wanted to serve out the remainder of her term, at which time he would run for re-election. Steny pulled some strings in Congress, and less than 3 months after her stroke, House Resolution 80 declared her seat vacant - and guess who was chosen to fill it! Spellman's husband? Haw! Good old Steny! What a guy!
I was a regular imbiber of Knob Creek, but a fellow Freeper suggested Maker's Mark. Enjoyed it very much, and now it has a prominent place on my bourbon shelf...
Try Woodford Reserve, too. Very good.
Stay far away from "Bulliett"; too sweet.
I'd say we're on to something. And I like supporting a fine American industry. I'll also admit to a taste of Jack Daniels occasionally.
I'll have to check it out. But, out here in the boonies there's not much choice on the shelf. I'll have to run in to DeKalb, IL where the wife works and check the stores out there. They have a somewhat better selection.
Jack serves in a pinch. Jim Beam is only good for a "Jim&Ginger" but, when made with Vernor's ginger ale (a one-time Detroit staple!), it is quite good.
My wife bought me a bottle of Baker's for XPmas. Very strong making it a fine "front porch" sipping bourbon. 4 fingers should last you about one hour.
Do you guys do any "at home" experimenting with odd-ball bourbons?
I have purchased some off-brand bourbons to try them and found them to be not good. I have a mixing bottle of these brands at home and occaisionally I'll create a very good blend. I need to start tracking what I'm adding.
"American Eagle" is a good brand to blend with others; by itself, well, that dog don't hunt.
Do I need to create a bourbon ping-list?
I don't enjoy Beam much at all. Some of these other names are new to me being out here in a small town. I'll have to check them out. There's another brand our store has on the shelf but I can't recall the name. Price wise, it's up there with Knob Creek, but I don't take that as gospel. I'll check it out tomorrow.
I think you'd have some takers among the DU crowd; myself included. But I don't imbibe too often so may not have too much to contribute.
You know, you two guys, both being a) in the Chicago area, b) Missouri Synod Lutherans, and c) DUFUing FReepers, ought to get together sometime for some single-malt scotch. And you ought to do it when I'm back up in Chicago, so I can join you!
They're not holding hands although the one on the right looks like he has a hand on Murtha's tush.
Not completely sure since I haven't seen them myself. I just assumed they were fire ants since they are so aggressive.
I had ONE tiny sip of Thunderbird once. NASTY stuff. The FUnnie thing is that you actually do feel like a bum the instant you experience its horrid taste.
I once had a huge bottle of Jack Daniels on like a rotating axel so you just had to swing it forward a bit for a shot. Do they still have those around?
Single malt scotch like Lagavullin (sp?). That stuff is incredible. Glen Fiddich is good too.
I'll drink to that!
I tried that a long time ago, when I was young and broke. As I recall, I never had much luck. My favorite scene involving experimenting is in "Mr. Roberts" when Doc tried making scotch. :-)
That sounds like a plan to me. However, I'll toast you with a straight bourbon instead.
