Vanity:What do you do if you discover you're dating an ultra-liberal conspiracy believer?

Some of you have been emailing me and enjoying my trials as I search for love in Blue Boston. I'm a 42-year-old non-religious Republican, anti-abortion, pro-W, etc. and the pickings are slim. But I managed to meet a fantastic woman, perfect for me in every way--I work in social services and am a fiction writer, and she is into all that stuff, and we just click as I have with no woman since my last relationships broke up.

I just had a discussion with her in which she asked about my politics. I have a No Political Discussions With Liberal Friends policy, and I thought it would suit this relationship. I was right. After I talked a little about my beliefs, she went on a tirade about how Bush caused 9/11, how the WTC was blown up by demolition charges, how Bush is a certifiable moron, and we've killed hundreds of thousands for no good reason, and on and on and on. I sat there, nodding, saying nothing.

This just happened this afternoon, and I'm kinda numb. We have only just started dating but we connect on many levels, but politics is SUCH an important part of my life that this is like a virus introduced into the relationship.

Any comments?

"I can't believe she's fallen so hard for me."

If she's really fallen that hard, then you have a lot of power to persuade. She will desire to please you and she will be interested in how you think. Don't be afraid to let her know, tactfully, that her viewpoint leaves you cold. This will be more effective if you let her know by your actions more than by your words. If you become more distant or aloof, for example, after one of her flare ups...it will drive her crazy trying to figure out what's wrong. Then, when she pressures you to talk, begin chipping away at just one specific issue that bothers you. Don't go after the whole liberal thing at once.

No, he's a real nice guy. In my opinion, sincere and caring, not like you are thinking at all. And he WANTS to like Christmas, that's big points right there!

Don't give up yet, J. I hope you can find happiness. Maybe she just doesn't know why she believes these things. I used to not know why i believed in the usual pukey liberal line. and i had long legs and other physical attributes that shall go unnamed here. But i learned! some didn't give up on me and I learned. Maybe she can learn????
Maybe she thinks that you are worth learning for??
Maybe she thinks YOU are so totally hot that she would open her eyes and her mind to truth??? It could happen!

Ah, give her a bit more time. See if the sky in her world becomes a bit more bluish.

It may not work, but, ah, I'm a romantic at heart. Gotta give the love thing at least a shot. Granted, I'm 0-43 in relationships lately, so maybe you shouldn't takemy advice...

A) I have never met a liberal that has ever truly thought anything through and can back heir opinion with facts. My own dear mother included.
B) Move to Oregon and fall madly in love with me. LOL!!

I thought of Carville and his wife, too. They do all right.

"We" don't know anything of their relationship except that they stand to make lots of money. Nothing against making money ;-) .

And why some attorneys marry—money.

"She might really feel/think/believe differently if she had a chance to meet other people who did not roundly condemn her for having an independent thought..."

Well said! You made me realize that I'm quite passionate about my beliefs, too. And justifiably so, because I researched them. I did my homework, IOW.

I googled all over after leaving the thread yesterday and as far as I can tell the 'war for oil' was a concoction of....[drumroll...cymbals...] THE NYT!

Anyone as diametrically opposed as those two must be together for one reason only: wild monkey sex!
