Hardball: 'Moderate, Bi-Partisan' Chaffee vs. 'Hard-Line Conservative' Laffey

What would you call someone who within the last six years has received a 100% rating from NARAL and Planned Parenthood and a 0% from the National Right-to-Life Committee? A 100% rating from the ACLU. A 0% rating from Phyllis Schlafly's Eagle Forum. A 100% rating from the League of Conservation Voters and a 0% rating from the conservative Family Research Council?

Oh, and someone who voted against George W. Bush for president in 2004, against the confirmation of Sam Alito to the Supreme Court, and who demands the withdrawal of US troops from Iraq?

I'd call that person a liberal. Not MSNBC. Not Hardball. Not Chris Matthews's field correspondent David Shuster. The person in question is Republican-barely-in-name-only Lincoln Chaffee of Rhode Island. How did Shuster describe him in a set-up piece for Hardball's discussion of the Rhode Island GOP senatorial primary this evening? A "moderate."

But when it came to Chaffee's opponent, Cranston Mayor Stephen Laffey, Shuster painted an otherwise more radical portrait, branding him a "hard-line conservative" and an "anti-abortion crusader." When's the last time Shuster or any MSNBC staffer labelled a liberal Democrat a pro-abortion or even a pro-choice "crusader"? Just wondering.

Later, Shuster claimed that Laffey had "repeatedly hammered Chaffee's bipartisanship on issues like immigration." I'd say it wasn't the bi-partisanship Laffey was criticizing, it was Chaffee's weakness and laxity on border security.

Concluded Shuster: "The question is, will Republicans vote for pragmatism or ideology?" Little doubt as to what Shuster, Matthews, MSNBC & Co. think they should do.

Sissy Chrissy and girlie-man David Shuster both lost what little bit of credibility they had over the Valeria Plame debacle.

They were sure they were going to bring down Dick Cheney, Karl Rove and the Bush Administration.

As my daddy used to say, all they did was piss into the wind.

I dont think that's right. John Chafee was elected in 1976 and I am almost certain a Demo held the seat before he did. Probably Sen Pastore though I will have to check on that. Sen Pell, also a Dem, held the other seat for a long time. I guess Jack Reed took that seat when Pell retired.

Any results on this race? Polls must have closed a while ago.

Then your dispute is with Carl Cameron with FNC, not me.

Chafee got the seat after his dad. His dad held it for 30 years.

Oh, 30 years is different from "the '30s." ;) John Chaffee was in office 23 years I believe. He was elected in 1976 and died in 1999, then Linc was appointed.

Chaffee is the only one who would have any chance to beat the Democrat.

It would appear that after receiving Bush's endorsement, and tonight's results that we will call him the Republican nominee for Senator of Rhode Island. I'm sure the usual suspects will be out imploring good conservatives not to throw him overboard in the general election despite the facts you've cited above.

Listen Dude, Carl Cameron reported the seat has been held by a Republican since the 1930s. If you dispute that, your dispute is with Carl Cameron of the FNC, not me.

According to the media, there is no such thing as liberals, leftists, socialists, etc. All politicians fall under one of the following categories:

"Moderate"
"Right-Wing"
"Extreme Right-Wing"

This is a conservative forum. Perhaps you should consider a liberal forum where people will share your "values" and work to elect more pro-abortion, gun-grabbing, gay-marriage, tax-and-spend, judicial activist candidates like your hero Chaffee.

Listen, the guy came out from the voting booth and criticized both Pres Bush and Karl Rove. Try again.

Exactly. Chafee is no winner and Laffey probably couldn't win in November.

I tried replying to this before but there either is a problem with my computer, or with FR so my response did not get posted I guess.

I didnt mean to address my comments to you or to say you had made an error. My problem is with Carl Cameron for making a statement that was very wrong. Maybe I should try to email him.

In any case, the elder Sen Chaffee was elected in 1976 and served 23 years until he died. Prior to that a Dem held that seat. If Cameron said otherwise he needs to get some lessons from Michael Barone.
