I was in a gifted and talented program in the 3rd and 4th grade. It was run by a great teacher who I still have regular contact with, almost 30 years later. (she was forced out by the administration for playing 'favorites', of which I was one, but I digress). The teacher took us on field trips to meet business leaders - we found out how newspapers run, how banks work, how malls work. About the most valuable part was that she'd take us to nicer restaurants (none of the kids families had much in the way of dough) and teach us proper restaurant etiquette - stuff that has stayed with me to this day. Great lessons.
the bar isn't that high for most State Universities You might want to watch out for statements like this. I graduated from the college of Engineering at a state university. It may have been easy to get in, but it also had a 70% washout rate.
Now, if the kids are "Womens/Queer Theory/Latino/Fill-in-the-Blank Studies" students at their local State U, maybe you've got a point there. :-)

A lot of people are stealing it from construction sites - that's where most people that go to the scrapyard 3 times a day get it from...
Otherwise, you do it the old fashioned way, you pay people to collect their scrap at a lesser premium than you get for it, and you turn around and scrap a bunch at once and reap the profit.

"Capitalization must be for "Norms" only.'
e.e. cummngs was one of the hot poets of the sixties and I think the leftwingers think that life without capitals is somewhat more self aware and profound.

There were a couple of related threads on DU essentially mocking the geniuses and asking Skinner for a separate forum. My favorite was "People Living in the Shadow of the Gifted People" or some such.
It was so witty I assumed it was done by trolls.
Skinner closed that thread with, "Enough." I think he has someone he pays to tell him when the foolishness on DU becomes too self-referential, since he doesn't seem to have a clue.

No, but you can check it out at Conservative Underground --probably 2nd or 3rd page -- think it came out yesterday. Title is "Living in the Shadow of Gifted People," or very near it.

Both terms get the point across. It's the whole purpose of these threads; to provide the posters an opportunity to write about themselves and just how gifted or 'special' they are; although no one appreciates it as much as they themselves do.
It's all flatulence, of course, but they're so wrapped up in themselves (this can apply to all of DULand, of course) that they're unable to see the hypocrisy.
Some on DU see it (in those who buy in to this agenda) and those retaliate by posting sarcasm. But they in turn miss the fact that this little corner of DU is actually a window into their own delusions.
It's really something to see.

LOL! Isn't that what texting on my Blackberry is for?
I can have high priority conversations on my cell phone ("Guess where I am? In my car!!! No, really! What are you doing?....."), surf FR, shave, and eat breakfast all at the same time that I'm driving.
/sarcasm I guess the joke is that it's not sarcastic for some people.

After Hurricane Wilma, trucks full of scrap from the hurricane damage were lined up for blocks to get to the scrap yards. I imagine the same thing happened on a bigger scale after Hurricane Katrina.

Ya know, it was way to early for me to post. I was talking about the CSU which has to accept everyine with EITHER a 3.00 GPA in High School OR some low threshhold on the SAT/ACT. Dumb general statement made by me.
Now, if the kids are "Womens/Queer Theory/Latino/Fill-in-the-Blank Studies" students at their local State U, maybe you've got a point there. :-)
That's how the UC used to be (but not anymore).

actually, it's very elitist because people in this group are assigning themselves to an intellectual class above the rank-and-file DU membership. It would make more sense to have a group for people above a certain IQ certification, although then you would be assuming that people of a lower IQ have nothing of value to contribute to a discussion.A that's the liberal reason for mainstreaming the faster children, the slower children, and Timmah! in the same class.
Hey you "gifted" individuals. Do you even care your political brethren thinks you should disappear because you make everyone else FEEEEEEEEL inadequate? Maybe that's why you are so fricken miserable.
For the record, I am half genius, half dufus. I am intelligent enough to know how dumb I am..
