Generally, it doesn't take much to demonstrate one's talent, but to announce it seems a little, uhh...gauche?

Bingo. Intelligence is demonstrable. If you have it, you don't need to announce it. This sounds more like a victim's support group for people who think they are "misunderstood" because of their "intelligence".

Keep flailing at the Wind.

Oops! I forgot to highlight the phrase 'back in 200'!

I guess I'm not gifted.

He told me that aluminum and copper prices surged recently and one could make some good bucks recycling. In fact, he told me that the guy who just got paid for his metal goes to that yard at least 3 times a day with metals.

Scrap prices have been on a high for about two years now.

A goodly portion of the 'scrap' is in fact purloined. Copper wire scrap comes from either demolition or new construction. On a large job, such as a multi story building, the electrical workers save the scrap and pool it, burn the insulation off and take it to the recycling/scrap yard. It's considered a job perk.

A lot of scrap aluminum (not cans) comes from manufacturing. People make a living stealing from dumpsters at manufacturing sites. Scrap yards contract with manufacturers for their scrap, supplying a dumpster that is replaced every few days. They actually bid on it.

the return of stagflation

DUmmies are so cute when they try to use big words, but don't know what they mean.

For those of you who don't remember Jimmy Carter, "stagflation" was coined back then to describe his economy, which featured both high inflation and high unemployment. Only in the DUmmie fantasy world is today's economy one of high unemployment.

(And inflation is only beginning to appear from high energy costs.)

When unemployment gets in the double digits and mortgages are being offered at 18 per cent, then we can talk about stagflation.

Actually, this phenomenon has intrigued me since I first started reading DUmmieland, in 2001, and noticed a lot of DUmmies never use capital letters.

I had to share my 10th grade English class with a couple of lesbo-radical Marxist types (literally: they ran an underground newspaper called RED TIDE; one of them outed herself on TV).

Anyway, during a lesson on grammar, spelling, & punctuation, one of them complained, "What difference does it make what the rules are? Just as long as we can communicate. Why do we need all these restrictions?"

Interestingly, you may have noticed that the name "God" is now in lower case in many publications. Ditto for the pronoun "he". (Unless, of course, it's She.)

The lack of capitalization for proper nouns probably implies a lack of respect for authority, as they don't want to acknowledge anything higher than themselves. (The reason for this "gifted" club, perhaps?)

You know what's better than winning the Special Olympics, yes?

No but I know that a ham sandwich is better than eternal happiness.

A Freudian slip, perhaps?

Now that you mention pink... Here's a picture of my scooter:

Nor do we have long lines at the gas pumps as we did in the early 1970's.

I don't think he understood, or had any knowledge of, his talking points (let alone spell them correctly).

I used to eat at a place called Norm's in L.A.. Great T-Bone steaks and breakfasts.

Boy, are you dating me.

I grew up in L.A. My dad used to take us to Norm's almost every week. I once went there for my birthday treat. You could get balloons that said, "I just ate at Norm's."

There might have been a chain, but the one I went to was on La Cienega -- back then called "Restaurant Row."

Is being in a "gifted" group at DU like being in a leftist, political "Special" Olympics?

LOL, too funny!

Q: You know the only thing better than winning a gold medal at the Political Special Olympics?

A: Not being a DUmmy!!!

Good point. Given the choice between an ample supply of gasoline at a high price, or shortages and lines at a "controlled" price, the 1970s government chose the latter.

Anyway, I came back a little later with a couple of old jumper batteries that I no longer use and got paid a total of $10. Okay, but WHERE does one find scrap aluminum and/or copper for recylcing. Copper wire is fine. I saw one guy pull up with a long length of VERY think copper wire and he got himself a hunk of cash for that.

Much of this comes with building destruction, ripping out CU wires, piping, etc. Might not be a bad business, if you know of places that are to be torn down.

Al is very expensive to produce from bauxite (ore), and is easier to recycle. I've known of people with small sailboats who have had masts/booms stolen before, for the scrap prices. You could go into 'Aluminum farming' (i.e. picking up cans) perhaps?

The price of steel & iron is pretty high now too. If you have access to a flatbed, and can find places with old farm equipment, cars, metal piles, etc and can take it to a scrap yard you could get some good $$ now too. The farmers/whoever might even pay you to get rid of it too.

Only on DU, would this type of smug, fatuous BS be tolerated.

What scares me more is that these people vote. And drive. In fact, they could be driving next to me right now. AAiiiiee!

Close.

Nothing is better than eternal happiness and a ham sandwich is better than nothing.

Especially with a big slice of beefsteak tomato on it.
