Of course, I always end up declaring things that don't need declared, and they give me a funny, disgusted look and then wave me through without checking - but I guess that could have gotten ugly if they had checked my bags.

CBP wouldn't have sent him on his merry way if there was any doubt. Most pills have distinguishing marks or characteristics, so it shouldn't have been too hard to confirm what it was.
