SUMMARY:
Nearly one year after the landmark U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Kelo v. City of New London, the property owners in the Fort Trumbull neighborhood of New London are still fighting to remain in their homes. They face a showdown with the City, which placed a May 31 deadline for them to accept offers from the City to sell their property or the City will forcibly evict them and impose close to one million dollars in back fees and rent.
On Monday, May 22, Susette Kelo, her attorney from the Institute for Justice, Scott Bullock, and other activists and property owners will hold a news conference to thank Conn. Governor M. Jodi Rell for her past support of the homeowners and to call on her to continue to support their fight to keep their homes in Fort Trumbull. Gov. Rell has stated previously that every effort should be made to keep the property owners in their homes. The City does not need their property to do new development projects.
The Kelo decision permitted the use of eminent domain for private development and touched off a firestorm of protest throughout the country, leading to nationwide efforts to curtail eminent domain for private commercial development. The Fort Trumbull homeowners, who have not only fought for their own rights but for the rights of all home and small business owners, are American heroes who should be honored, not evicted.
