How many times have you turned a contractor away after he arrived at your home with illegal immigrants to start the job? How many times have you refused to frequent a restaurant when you realized the busboys couldn't speak English? Did you even notice most times? Have you refused to stay in hotels that employ illegal immigrants as maids? Did you complain to your local McDonald's, or do you still visit it because it's convenient?
How many presidents have gotten off the hook for not enforcing our immigration and employment laws because we Americans had different priorities? Well, that attitude has come back to bite us in the butt.
We are just as guilty for the situation if we've chosen to ignore the obvious. That doesn't excuse the illegal immigrants for breaking our laws, but if we demanded that our government enforce our laws from the get go, instead of chosing candidates based upon gas prices, for goodness sake, we wouldn't be here.
Her clear-headedness is so refreshing.
Employers are guilty who hire them (and cheat on their taxes)
We're supposed to be the ones who don't try to avoid responsibility for our actions. The writer addresses not those situations we don't know about, but the employers we DO know about, and we still give them our business.
So true. I know this has been a big issue for many in the past. However, I think its fair to say that for the last 30 years we have pretty much ignored the whole thing while reaping some of the benefits. This is one reason when we are talking about folks that have been here for years have families etc the charge of criminal doesnt grab me that much. In a very big way by simple indifference perhaps we have made some sort of social compact here in some way. At least to their families. AHH this issue is a tough one. Last Sunday, I was being bad in Church (talking before mass) and was talking to a woman that was on the Parish Council about this issue. She pointed out a guy she said that was illegal. I was pretty shocked. HE had been there since I starting attending. Never knew and his even kids go to the Catholic school
Not to some folks, who see it as very clear-cut. While I support their position on the issue--wall; ID; employer fines, etc--I am a bit shocked to find so many supposed Christians being so damned heartless where the human element is concerned.
Of course, these people are criminals; that's not the point I'm addressing. I'm saying, okay, they are, and they should have thought about that before they broke the law.
But to DENY that in the process of getting rid of illegals we will be breaking up families is the height of hypocrisy from a supposed "family-first" forum. And if not denying that, simply not caring about these families is curious considering how pro-family we all supposedly are.
Great tagline, and thanks for pointing me to The Anchoress, which is where I got this link.
In other words, "it's for the children"?
A disappointing response to a complex problem. Nowhere have I said we shouldn't deport illegals ASAP. But snarky mockery of the human cost of these people's actions is pretty odd from a supposedly "pro-life, pro-family" site with an overwhelming Christian membership.
Do as I say, not as I do, I guess.
I never said I was a Christian. And I never said anywhere that we SHOULD deport anyone.
