Pentagon eyes ways to use military for border security

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Faced with growing pressure from Southern states, the Bush administration wants the military to come up with ideas to help solve security problems along the U.S. border with Mexico.

In back-to-back moves this week, the Pentagon began exploring ways to lend support at the Southern border, while the House on Thursday voted to allow the Homeland Security Department in limited cases to use soldiers in that region.

At the Pentagon, Paul McHale, the assistant secretary of defense for homeland defense, asked officials to offer options for the use of military resources and troops -- particularly the National Guard -- along the border with Mexico, according to defense officials familiar with the discussions.

The officials, who requested anonymity because the matter has not been made public, said there were no details yet on a defense strategy.

Thursday's House vote allowed Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld to assign military personnel under certain circumstances to help the Homeland Security Department with border security. The vote was 252-171, and the provision was added to a larger military measure.

The actions underscored the importance of the border and immigration issues, yet were tentative enough to reflect worries about drawing the nation's armed forces into a politically sensitive domestic role.

Southern lawmakers met this week with White House strategist Karl Rove for a discussion that included making greater use of National Guard troops to shore up border control.

The Senate is poised to pass legislation this month that would call for additional border security, a new guest worker program and provisions opening the way to eventual citizenship for many of the estimated 11 million to 12 million illegal immigrants in the country.

Watch the ACLU sue them and then the troops will be removed.

Isn't it the primary purpose of our armed forces to defend our country from invasion. Where does it say that we cannot use our full military might on the border?

Oh, the American Communist Liberation Unit (ACLU) will find a way to get around that and pull the troops off of the border and stop the fence. All they need to do is go to the 9th circut court of appeals to find a judge that is sympathetic.

If what you say is true, (and I hope it isn't), then the weekly pleas from the Republican Party for money will continue to be thrown into the trash unowned.
The conservatives in government have yet to realize there is a "New Constituency" out here.
This new constituency is tired of the milque toast way conservatives have dealt with leftist traitors in the past.
We want to get down in the dirt with them and slug it out until THEY'RE the ones consistently on the defensive.
When Republicans emerge from behind the trees, and stop quivering...I may contribute again....I'm not holding my breath.

I've come to realize that if ammnesty is given, it won't matter if conservative support for the GOP is rock solid or not. We'll never be able to overcome the millions of new democratic voters being allowed across the border.

EXACTLY!! Protect us from this invading army, because that is what they are. How is it any different if the army comes in waves of 100 at a time or the entire 12 million at once? The total remains the same. They are destroying our way of life and bleeding us dry.

After the Senate stabs us in the back yesterday, the government "talks" about a tentative measure to throw us a bone?

I for one will remember this in November and with every call or letter I receive from the RNC traitors.

I don't know about that. Who needs lawsuits when you've got millions upon millions (only a small percetage of the total) who are well-organized and demanding OPEN BORDERS. We've already witnessed on several occassions their ability to take over cities all across this country as a threatening show of force meant to intimidate our lawmakers. Not a single sign said "Secure the Border".

If President Bush sees fit to put the military on the border (and I think its about time), I predict their "La Revolucion" will begin. Which, IMO, will show our D.C. leadership exactly who we are dealing with behind those american flags and, if their Revolucion is extensive and pervasive enough, it will bring a resolution and hopefully an end to any further talks of 'earned' amnesty and 'open' borders, and the divisiveness this issue has brought to the party.

Our D.C. leadership has created this monster, allowing it to fester and grow to perhaps 30 million strong and short of giving in to its demands, IMO, will be forced to face it head on.

You're absolutely right. How do we go about making certain that we keep the majority AND elect the Republicans who will do both, close the border to illegals and not give amnesty?

We won the white house with around 6 million votes and that was with firm conservative support. If only half of the 11 million illegals (and that's a lowball number) were to vote, we're down to less than a 1 million vote lead.

Since we operate on an electoral college system it doesn't even have to be huge numbers. In some states it only takes a couple of thousand to tip the scales in favor of the democrats.

Because the ACLU will be able to whip up a media frenzy, and give their claims "Legitimacy.

When you know that any conservative nominees can be easily overridden by packing the court, you know that if the libs defeat you again, you are done.

Hey, Adminstration, place a phone call ot the Israelis, they will tell you, to stop icursions into your soverign country, build a wall, fence, series of fences and place sentry guards ever so often.

Check also with any prison in any state in America, if you desire to keep someone out, or in their case, violent offenders in, build a wall and even a fence.

...the weekly pleas from the Republican Party for money will continue to be thrown into the trash unopened.

Don't throw them away unopened - open them, write "Not one dime until our borders are SEALED!" across the remittance form and return to them in the postage paid envelope.

They will not know what you think unless you tell them.

Yeah, and we all know what a nifty job DHS has done so far. Let the military check up on them. Whip 'em into shape...
