I Am A German...and I Demand Equal Rights
HMV

My countrymen wait for an average period of eight years to legally emmigrate to the United States. We are skilled, hard-working, honest and many of us are fluent in English. We also obey the immigration laws, illegal German immigrants represent only one tenth of one percent of all illegal immigration. Its time for things to change.

We have seen how illegal immigrants from Mexico are allowed into the United States, and are able to work and not pay taxes. We've seen border patrol agents simply look the other way when illegals enter. We have a simple request...we want equal treatment under U. S. laws.

In the immigration battle, WE are the oppressed. If we try to jump ship or run through immigration at an airport in an attempt to reside illegally in the United States, we will be hunted down by INS and forced to leave. For us, there is a huge wall erected at every port of entry into the United States.

We've thought of taking action. We've thought of mobilizing the millions of German decendants living in the United States and staging protests in every major city. We've asked our countrymen to be sure to wave the German flag at the rallies to show their solidarity with our cause, just like we've recently seen.

But when we floated this idea among other Americans, especially our brethern who are currently demonstrating for immigration rights, they were outraged. "The German flag?" they yelled, "You are racist Nazis!" We ask, then, what, amigo, does that make you?

We don't understand. We are model citizens who are law abiding and and highly skilled, but when we ask for simple fairness in accessing the wealth and freedom of America, they call us names that evoke the most bitter racial stereotypes of our past.

Yes, this debate IS about one simple concept...fairness. There are millions of Europeans, Africans, South Americans and Asians who wait for years for the promise of America to be available to them. Proximity to the border does not change the ideal of fairness, disparity of wealth does not change the ideal of fairness. We are a fair people, and fairness should be what this debate is all about.

I read that the average wait to legally bring a family member from the Phillipines is 23 years.

The writer shows an intransigent refusal to assimilate into American culture. How arrogant for native european to come over here and assume that in this country, fairness has anything to do with white people.

Fairness for immigrants isn't the only thing the debate is about, but it has been neglected in most discussions. Excellent post, good sir. BTTT.
