DeWine:My five minuets with the Senator;and why I will not support him for re-election.
face-to-face | 4/09/06 | Thomas G. Herrick

Last night I attended the Geauga County,Ohio,GOP annual Lincoln day dinner.Senator Mike DeWine was the key-note speaker. At the VIP hour prior to dinner,I had the opportunity to get five minuets of face time with the senator, whom I have supported in past elections.I have recently had second thoughts about supporting the senator, primarilly because of his independent positions on several positions,ie,capital gains and death taxes, and drilling in ANWAR.Now this was supposed to be a festive occasion celebrating the great President Lincoln,so I was not too rough with my questions. However,I asked the senator why he voted against ANWAR drilling, when about 55 GOP senators, including the two from Alaska, were firmly in favor? He jumped on me in a very defensive manner and asked"what about all the other good things he had supported? He accused me of being a one issue voter and stated that he could retire without regrets, and did not need my vote!"After dinner, during his speech, all he did was promote himself by listing all his grand achievements, especially getting two conservative Supreme Court Justices confirmed!! This was to be a tribute to the great Abe Lincoln not a fest for Mike DeWine.I would have been less turned off by DeWine if only he had had a simple conversation regarding a very simple question I asked him.Instead,he practically ranted when I challanged him and accused me of not letting him speak!! I do not want to lose the senate majority, but I find it very difficult to support Senator Dewine.

So, you would support his liberal Democrat opponent instead? Or not vote (which effectively amounts to pretty much the same thing)?

Minuet

(French - menuet; German - Menuett; Italian - minuetto).
A dance, of French origin, in a moderate triple metre. It was known at Louis XIV's court as an elegant social dance performed by one couple at a time, and remained the most popular dance among the European aristocracy until the late 18th century. Lully introduced numerous minuets into his operas and ballets and the dance was frequently included in Baroque keyboard and ensemble suites. Italian minuets, often in 3/8 or 6/8 time, were faster.
The minuet was the only important dance to survive info the Classical period. Italian opera overtures of the early 18th century often close with a minuet, as do many symphonies by G.B. Sammartini, Abel, J.W. Stamitz and Monn and some early piano sonatas by Haydn. After about 1770 the ternary minuet-trio-minuet (da capo), derived from the Baroque practice of playing two minuets 'alternativement', became the standard third (occasionally second) of four movements in symphonies and string quartets. Haydn was the first to substitute movements called 'scherzo' for minuets (in his string quartets op.33) and Beethoven preferred vigorous and robust scherzos in the standard minuet and trio layout, sometimes extended to include a repeat of the trio and a second repeat of the scherzo.

19th-century composers were less interested in the minuet, but some 20th-century composers, including Francaix, Bartók, Schönberg and Ravel, have revived it for its associations with the past.

Oh, come on, DeWine's great. Five "minuets" isn't long enough.

Winning should not be your primary goal. If you feel he doesn't adequately represent you then don't support him.

The final straw for me is his love of illegal aliens. I'll be sitting the Senate race out.

Not true, there is a conservative alternative who will give DeWine a real test in the primary.DeWine is not doing well in the polls. If it comes right down to it I would have to vote DeWine but hold my nose.

"Now this was supposed to be a festive occasion celebrating the great President Lincoln,so I was not too rough with my questions."

In other words, the questioner was out of line asking serious questions at a festive occasion.

There is no reason whatsoever not to be drilling in ANWR. Its to put it simply--stupid not to.Yes: I know all the argument against it and they are BS. IMO the same goes for the fields off Florida and California. It is totally unacceptable to be dependent on people who hate our guts for oil.

Thank you for being true to yourself...

Base your politics on your morals.. not your morals on the letter (D) or (R).....

We need to stay true to the Republican agenda and values.. and when our Representatives don't- remember that THEY left us.. we did NOT leave them....

Cudos to you for doing just this!

It is those of us that keep our integrity and hold their feet to the fire that can save the Republican Party and this country... not those that Vote R no matter what the morons do....

I spoke with one of his staff to voice my displeasure about his opposition to John Bolton becoming U.N. Ambassador. She said the Senator would be issuing a formal statement to justify his position and asked if I wanted his letter sent to me. Of course, I said, "Yes."

When it arrived, I couldn't believe the lack of thoughtfulness which went into his decision. All he could say was that he had heard that Mr. Bolton was rude to people in the past and he didn't think that would make for a good Ambassador. What a sell-out. I'm sure certain funds have wended their way into his bank account due to the "decisions" he has made on behalf of his constituents. I'll never vote for him again!

In other words, the questioner was out of line asking serious questions at a festive occasion.

What was he supposed to ask him? What's your favorite wine? It was a simple question and should be expected by the Senator.

Has a familiar ring to it.

Pat Toomey could have taken out Sphincter here in PA, but the Bush gang just couldn't help themselves, could they?

Is everyone happy that Arlen on the job?
