Bordes Bans Sale of Magazine

There is some irony in this report from the SFChronicle about Borders book sellers chain. They have decided not to carry the April-May issue of Free Inquiry because it contains the controversial drawings of the Prophet Muhammad that sent Muslims into such a tizzy a few months ago.

Here is Borders Bookseller's reason for this ban:

"For us, the safety and security of our customers and employees is a top priority, and we believe that carrying this issue could challenge that priority," Borders Group Inc. spokeswoman Beth Bingham said Wednesday.
I guess we have one more western corporation/media outlet running for the hills, scared of the evil Muslims do. Where IS our backbone again?

Naturally, the folks at Free Inquiry disagree and I cannot say that I blame them.

"What is at stake is the precious right of freedom of expression," said Paul Kurtz, editor-in-chief of Free Inquiry. "Cartoons often provide an important form of political satire ... To refuse to distribute a publication because of fear of vigilante violence is to undermine freedom of press — so vital for our democracy."
America, sometimes we are tasked to make some small measure of sacrifice for what is right. Borders is choosing to ignore that requirement for freedom.

Now, here is the irony. Borders Books is sponsoring an effort to introduce readers to books that have been banned in one place or another. Take a look at this story from Plusultrablog for the details of this program.

So, I guess Borders only wants us to see the "safe" things that were banned, or the banned things that THEY feel need to be made available instead of all banned matter like the magazine THEY just banned from their own stores.

Come ON America. Get a backbone here. Democrats may want to placate terrorists, cut and run, and give the enemy succor, but a REAL American should stiffen the resolve to beat such evil. Borders is hypocritical in the extreme in this decision to ban the April-May issue of Free Inquiry. They should be made aware of America's displeasure.

You can do that by emailing Borders here: Borders Contact us Page.

So if we just go on record that we think "The Nation" is evil, and people selling it or reading it should be killed, we can get it pulled from the shelves?

Is that what we want to do, teach people that if they threaten violence, they can have their way?

HA, good one!

Yeah... so is "Out" magazine which is curiously often right next to the Weekly Standard at the store I always go to to buy my political magazines!!

BAN IT...IT'S EVIL! Maybe a gay Muslim would be upset at "Out" magazine!?

Interesting they're 1 of the few outlets to ADMIT it's because they're afraid. Instead of saying they feel it's "insensitive" to the poor dear Moslems.

I'm sorry, you can call them cowardly, but at least they're pin-pointing the REAL problem by admitting they're scared.
