My Great-Uncle has died....
Today | Me

Posted on 03/23/2006 2:31:19 PM PST by MikefromOhio

Sorry for the vanity...

Just asking for prayer for my family, especially my Dad and his two sisters. We received word today, about half an hour ago, that my Great Uncle Howard had died in Tennessee from a brief illness. He was 88 years old and a veteran of World War II.

Thank you.

88 sounds like a full life. Hope he left feeling like he got his money's worth.

RIP

The soldier stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass,
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, you soldier,
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My Church have you been true?"
The soldier squared his shoulders and
said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry guns,
Can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays,
And at times my talk was tough,
And sometimes I've been violent,
Because the world is awfully rough.
But, I never took a penny
That wasn't mine to keep...
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep,

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear,
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here,
They never wanted me around,
Except to calm their fears.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand,
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't, I'll understand."
There was a silence all around the throne,
Where the saints had often trod,
As the soldier waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.

"Step forward now, you soldier,
You've borne your burdens well,
Walk peacefully on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in Hell."

I hope you can find comfort in knowing that your soldier has gone home.

I have also recently (March 4, 2006) lost my dear father, also a veteran of WWII.

Since Mom didn't want to get out of the car (age 85) in the snowstorm that we buried Dad in, I had the sincere privilege of receiving the flag. We had full honors, 6 soldiers folding the flag, 21 gun salute, taps played live.

But I cried the whole time.

Please tell me what the soldier said to me when he handed me the flag.

He started out with On behalf of the President of the United States........and ended with "for your loved one". I just lost it through the rest of it all.

Dad was 89 years, 6 months and 2 days. He was only ill briefly toward the end. Six months ago we all went fishing and caught our limits and had to throw many back in the lake. Eagles and ospreys fished along side of us. Deer came down and drank their fill at the waters edge. We did NOT see any bears, although Dad has killed two in the hills near there (Northern California)

Dad did everything he ever wanted to, hunt, fish, and farm. We ate everything he shot...well all except for the coyotes.

Dad was a devout Christian. He is safe at home now with the Savior.

Mike, I'm sorry for your loss. I now you will miss your uncle as I will miss my Dad.
