I was just looking at the web and came up with this archived "talking points" from the Beeb when Bubba left the White House in 2001. Many of you ahve heard that the Left outside the United States loves Clinton yada yada. This conflicts with what I saw in my own eyes from newspapers and news reports published in New Zealand when Bubba was in the White House. I remember they damned the fellow as yet-another-American-imperialist. I have here comments from the BBC talking points which reflect what I saw as resembling anti-American-and-Clinton comments from this country's Left during the Clinton years:
---------------------------------------------------------
He will go down as the man who made America vain and egocentric and not willing to deal with the outside world. He encouraged the US to use its financial muscle to dictate to the world how it should live and any difference of opinion is not to be tolerated. Wake up America and get a president with compassion not just passion.
Mark Lisle, Germany
---------------------------------------------------------
For merciless bombing campaigns to distract attention from him NOT 'having sexual relations with that woman'. For supporting Israel as they broke numerous UN Resolutions in order to gain the political support of the New York Jewish Vote. For his love for a fine Cuban Cigar!
Wayne Brannan, UK
---------------------------------------------------------
Clinton clearly has done a good job on the domestic front creating jobs and improving the already high American quality of life. However he still pursued the bully-boy foreign policy of the United States which did not help his popularity outside of the US. Inside the US I believe he will be remembered as the President who was there when petrol prices peaked.
Nicholas Bradley, UK
---------------------------------------------------------
Now this is Clinton-damning, from the Left. I wonder what these people think of him now? Perhaps they now think "Clinton was bad, but George W. Bushitler is infinitely worse!" eh?
First ever gold? I recall that in recent games, over half of all gold medals fall into the hands of Australian athletes.
But we had never won gold in the triathalon before and hence the headline. Predictably it comes from the G&M. The Australians had the advantage of being summer fit according to the article. Can you imagine how suitable the Australian summer is for athletics training? It seems they haven't heard that athletics is a winter sport in Australia.
I learned from a few years of discussions with conservatives in Britain and France that most politically oriented people in those countries (conservative, liberal, labor--all) have been more interested in "empire" and intriguing political schemes than we generally are. All of those who discussed the issues with me did stubbornly assume that we Americans are generally very engaged in building a worldwide empire for us to rule.
On some things, they think differently from the way we do.
It is definitely a yes. If you pick up any modern British history textbooks both Teddy Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson are likewise denounced as "unrepentant imperialists". I think it would be shock to American liberals since Wilson is one of their heroes.
Also note that these people have no regrets over the historic colonial empires their ancestors built and run.
