THE HAGUE, 11/02/06 - More and more people are leaving the Netherlands. As the birth rate is also falling, population growth in 2005 was as a result the lowest since 1900, according to data released Friday by the Central Bureau for Statistics (CBS).
Last year, 121,000 Dutch people emigrated abroad, compared with 110,000 a year earlier. The number of immigrants was much lower, unchanged from 2004 at 94,000. Among these, the numbers from traditional immigration countries such as Turkey and Morocco shrank considerably.
Half of the emigrants were born in the Netherlands. Among these, more and more emigrate to countries including Belgium, Germany, the UK and the Netherlands Antilles. Among emigrants not born in the Netherlands, many return to their home country, or they are asylum-seekers who look for a haven in another country.
Among the immigrants, Poles have now reached the top of the list; last year, the CBS reported 7,000 Polish immigrants compared with 2,000 in 2004. CBS demographer Jan Latten speaks of "a different type of immigrant than earlier. Now, they are mainly from the countries in the former East Bloc. Their numbers will still grow in the coming years."
The number of births dropped to 188,000 last year, 6,000 fewer than in 2004. This decline began in 2000 and is also expected to continue in the coming years as there will be fewer women in the right age-group for giving birth. The number of deaths was unchanged from 2004 at 137,000.
The net population increase last year was just 30,000, to a total of 16.34 million. Latten expects that after decades of net immigration, the present emigration surplus will continue. "There will still be an exodus in the coming years."
