Semi-News: Magazine Makes Case for Impeachment

The left-leaning Nation magazine laid out a case for impeaching President Bush. In an article in the latest issue of the magazine, Elizabeth Holtzman listed the “high crimes and misdemeanors” that form the foundation of the case.

“The crimes of George Bush are legion,” wrote Holtzman. “He has stolen two elections, deposed the legitimate governments of two foreign nations, violated the privacy of international terrorists, appointed conservative judges, repeatedly used bad grammar, and has a smirking face we just can’t stand.”

A survey of Nation subscribers showed a majority favor impeaching the president. “There is no way Bush can stand against this rising tide of popular opposition,” wrote Holtzman.

Nation has only 160,000 subscribers. However, Holtzman described these readers as “highly efficacious voters.” “Most of our readers are active voters,” wrote Holtzman. “Many have voted multiple times for Bush’s opponents in the last two elections.”

Holtzman went on to point out that Nation readers have already written over a dozen letters to the Democratic leadership in congress demanding that they begin impeachment hearings.

deposed the legitimate governments of two foreign nations

Lost me right there. Saddam and the Taliban both came to power through violence and lost it the same way. He who lives by the sword will die by the sword. At no time during their sway were either of these governments legitimate in any logical sense of the term.

Except that Bush removed them, giving them ex post facto legitimacy in these idiots' eyes.

I think this might be a bit of satire on his part...

One little issue eludes the libs on this impeachment talk. A minority party can't do it.

Perhaps they should run right out and try to win an election somewhere.

> Is this satire?

It appears to be,
but their readership won't "get" it.

... I'm not even sure the author does :-)

Didn't the LAT just take a lot of grief over a
supposed satire that nobody got?

The Nation is a joke. Right up there with Mother Jones.

violated the privacy of international terrorists...

He was not satisfied with mere eavesdropping, he has used missiles, commandos, and daisy cutter bombs to disrupt and destroy their plans, supplies, bank accounts, and personnel.

By her standards, Hitler and his Nazis were a 'legitimate government'.

Actually, they were.

The Nazis came to power through democratic means, at least technically. They maintained themselves, of course, once in power, by using utterly and proudly undemocratic tactics.

But because the Reichstag essentially voted itself out of existence with an Enabling Act, most everything the Nazis did was technically "legal."

FWIW, the Nazis would probably have received somewhere around 85% of a perfectly free vote in 1938 or so.

Which just goes to show the limitations of elections and democratic methods. They cannot stand if there is massive popular support for anti-democratic groups.
