Frank Lindh is on a campaign to gain clemency for his son, John Walker Lindh, a.k.a Johnny Jihad or (my favorite nickname, courtesy of Michael Savage) Ratboy.
And he has the Marin Independent Journal giving him a helping hand.
It all started in November, when the IJ ran a front page feature on the traitor by Beth Ashley, the Lifestyles writer. Her article told how Ratboy was bound by duct tape to a stretcher, with a bullet wound which remained untreated for a couple of days. Her story also contained discussions with his lawyers, who are trying to get the 20 year sentence from his 2002 plea deal commuted.
Ashley's sympathetic story on Ratboy is not surprising to those familiar with her writing. She has used her Sunday Lifestyles column to attack the Bush Administration, the War on Terrorism and Republicans in general. She has also written about her attendance at so-called "anti-war protests." That bias should have disqualified her from writing the story.
This past Thursday, Frank Lindh took his case to the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco and the IJ was there. In his speech, he attacked government officials (including Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld & former Attorney General John Ashcroft) for the treatment of his traitor son while he continued his plea for clemency.
