(Vanity) Folding@Home FReepers - A Tribute to Ronald Reagan
self ^ | 01/08/2005 | self

Posted on 01/08/2006 7:41:43 AM PST by texas booster

OK, new thread for the next week.

First, a big shout out to the SETI and BOINC members who have added CPUs to the effort. Remember, its Team 36120, NOT Team 0.

Next, congrats to all for bumping our team up to 384 processors and 192 user names. We have a number of new users in the team, with nearly a dozen folders now from GetLoaded.com all popping onto the hit list this week.

Special mention to Klutz Dohanger, who has quietly volunteered 80 systems to fold. That is 20% of all of the Free Republic Folders systems actively engaged in research. He is on a pace to pop 100,000 points personally before the end of January.

Malsua, uriah, Ken in Texas and Andrewksu are solidly in the top 10. Malsua is continuing to add (fast) systems and is now the number two folder on the team. Andrewksu will be the next member to hit 10,000 points. Great job!

Free Republic Folding@Home Stats Page

On the global front, Free Republic Folders is now listed at # 624. We are poised to overtake (today):

Flowers of Happiness (awww, ain’t that sweet)
SpongeZone
Team Redneck Beatdown
Go Navy!
French-Krew
and the Rochester Institute of Technology

As we continue to grow there are a number of milestones coming around the bend:

Top 600 by Monday
Top 500 within eight days
Top 400 within three weeks

We have 430,000 points so far. We will reach:

500,000 points by Thursday
750,000 points by Jan 24
1,000,000 points in early February

Thanks again to all that are helping us advance science and promote the peaceful use of computers.

Do I have to do anything in particular to stop it from folding or just hit the turn off computer button?

If using the console and you havn't changed anything, then the checkpoint is 15 minutes.

A question, if you please!

I'm currently folding p764_vin 3.3-0.4nopbc. The link at http://vspx27.stanford.edu/psummary.html says that it is worth 39 points and is 100 frames.

It has sent me 500 frames. Do I still only get 39 points for that, do you know?

re: Lost WU's

I lost about a week's work once when my computer spontaneously rebooted when I plugged in a USB camera. I did some research over at the FAH forum. It appears lots of people have the problem of bad checksums from time to time. The most common solution offered is to get a more stable system (easy for you to say).

Why the program can't just go back to a previous save isn't clear to me, surely all of the prior saves can't be corrupted at once. It appears to me the program must overwrite the previous save each time it writes checkpoint files.

If you have a network and one particular machine tends to be unstable, FAH suggests you install the program to a more reliable network drive and run it from there.

Also there is a 3rd party program (FAHBS) that is supposed to back up the checkpoint files to make job recovery fairly easy. This is apparently a DOS batch file and needs to run manually or set up in the task manager to run at preset times. I started to look into this, but haven't gotten around to it (i.e. my computer is pretty stable and hasn't crashed again, so far).

In researching the above I an across a page of links to lots of programs that may be of interest to other folders F@H links. Also, the forum where these are posted is an excellent source of info on all aspects of the project, scoring, running the software, etc.

Folding for the Gipper (hmmm - The FR spell checker thinks Gipper is a mispelling and suggested Gypper as an alternative. This ain't right!)

Welp, Folding@home says we're team #496 now, and my first packet went in. Another 116 pointer in the hopper now, and I'm just waiting to see my name show up on the team list. Yay!

So we've not only broken the 500-mark, but we've shattered it. :)

"re: Lost WU's"

Here's what works for me:

I have two W98SE machines that like to crash frequently. What I do is copy the whole Folding@Home directory (and subdirectories) to another part of the HD (daily or so and just before it is finished). This way, if the FAH wants to start over from zero after an "event", it can be stopped and a copy of the backup files put back in the original location. Then restart it and not nearly as much is lost. I don't seem to have much trouble with other O/S's, so don't bother to do backups on those.

Thanks for the info, this is the first time I have had any trouble resuming a wu after a reboot. We had thunderstorms rolling through early Saturday morning so there is no telling what happened.

There might be differnces in the stability of different work packages. My previous wu's used used FAH_core7A. This project caused FAH_core79 to be downloaded and used. I'm not sure what the differences are, but if those are version numbers, 9 would be older then A.

I'm not going to worry about it unless it starts happening frequently.
