Welcome to the folding at home thread. The previous thread has gotten too large, so we move on to yet another.
While this folding@home team is not officially sanctioned by Free Republic, it's members, or it's founders, it is comprised primarily of Free Republic members in good standing, who have banded together, to donate their excess CPU cycles to a worthy cause. Via Distributed computing, millions of computers around the world, contribute directly to scientific research, in the quest for a greater understanding of diseases such as Alzheimers, Cancer, and Mad Cow (BSE).
Currently, the team is in 777th place, having moved up from 1200th place, a week earlier, and is now in the top 100 teams, for daily contributions.
This is an entirely voluntary program, and if you want to learn more, links are provided to the program, or it is easily googled by "folding@home".

Thanks
I'm new to this folding stuff, and I've only been on FR for just over a year and this hooplah sucks.
For whatever it's worth, my late father was a Stanford graduate just like most of my family and my family would be hard-pressed to qualify as libtards! They support Stanford with large endowments as well; my father even left a big chunk of money to Stanford in his will. Let's face it, libtards seem to infiltrate most institutions of higher learning, but this project does not appear to be one of those situations. If it was good enough for generations of my conservative family, it's good enough for me to donate CPU time.
Oh well. I'll continue to participate in this project. I also respect Jim Robinson's position, and this is my favorite website. There is no place on the internet like FR, and Mr. Robinson has clearly done well exercising the judgment he has to have built what he has. I will also continue to support Free Republic.
Aloha. Still part of Team #36120 and still part of FR.
Mahalo, and I agree with you on all.
Bump!
I used to work for a laundry that folded.
But I washed out, my sales were flat.
Can you explain to me in simple terms what this is all about?
I was thinking "Used to be FreeRepublic until JR nixed" was a good name.
Also, nice profile.
Stanford University is researching the mutation of proteins, for the ultimate goal of providing clues to the cures for many diseases, that are protein based, ie, alzheimers, mad cow, and many forms of cancer.
To simulate the possible mutations (or foldings) of these proteins in the laboratory, would take decades, but they have come up with computer models, that accurately predict what long term (physical)experiments would produce.
However, these models take intense computing power. Supercomputers aren't the answer, they're too expensive, and yes, they're relatively slow, when it comes to this type of calculation. They operate in parallel, which is faster, for the applications that they're designed for, but for simulations of this type, they're just inadequate.
By using distributed computing, ie, running a small client program, on millions of computers, Stanford overcomes the limitations of the supercomputers, and calculates many more folds, in a shorter time.
In order to "pique" the interest of those with the ability to supply excess cpu cycles, Stanford setup the program on a competitive basis, with teams earning points. There is no profit, no gain, no publicity for the winners, just a sense of having contributed.
To paraphrase Mr. Burns:
"Patience, Dundee... climb the ladder."
Alright, alright, alright, already!!!
I just downloaded and set it up for my home machine. I'll be happy to fold some for the Gipper...
Welcome to the team.
Thanks, but I have a question. I enabled the display, and it says it's "waiting for core, step 20 (it's been counting up) At the bottom of the screen it says "waiting for userid from server
Then, when I looked at the log, it said this:
Launch directory: C:\Program Files\Folding@Home
[07:13:41] - Ask before connecting: No
[07:13:41] - User name: Bush_Democrat (Team 36120)
[07:13:41] - User ID not found locally
[07:13:41] + Requesting User ID from server
[07:29:31] Opening http://vspx27.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=teampage&teamnum=36120...
[07:29:59] Opening http://vspx27.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=userpage&username=Bush_Democrat...
Did I do something wrong? Also, when I look at the team statistics, my name doesn't appear yet.
Send it to me via Freepmail...
On second thought... it might do something nasty to Jim's FreeRepublic Server on its way into my freepmail box...
You drink it, but hoist it to me!
When ya'll first introduced me to this, I realized it so worthwhile at such a small effort for me personally. I was wasting my computer on SETI anyway.
Thank you all for your efforts, and here is to our climb towards the top 100!
"pokey" is still poking along, 106 of 400 frames completed. At this rate, I should show up as a team member sometime on the 9th.
Your name won't appear until you complete a Work Unit (WU).
Thanks for the ping.
Please keep me ON your ping list.
