American Christians: Get a Grip!
November 29 2005 | Steve Fletcher

Posted on 11/29/2005 11:36:32 AM PST by Pastor Fletcher

Please, PLEASE, tell me you are kidding!

When I saw the line “’A Petition to Stop the Ban on the Use of "Christmas" By Major Retailers” I thought it was a joke. I was not taken back by the possibility of retailers ‘banning Christmas.” No, I was taken back by the absurdity of a petition to address this issue.

Christians in America, will you please wake up and get a grip? We are so focused on the “culture war” we are neglecting the battle for the souls of men. The slippery slope is not the eventual dechristianization of America. GOOD GRIEF! The slippery slope is the growing distraction away from the proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Why are Christians asking non-Christians to live, act and think like Christians? We have been begging the public schools to pray to God for us. We have been all hot and bothered because our courts will not publicly display the Word of God for us. Now, we are miffed that retailers do not love the Son of God for us. This latest tempest in a teapot is indicative of how desperate Christians are to be embraced by the culture.

We have got our heads buried so deep in our history books that we have lost our theological and biblical vision. If the only way we can “keep Christ in Christmas” is to boycott Walmart for saying “Happy Holidays” we have the problem, not Wal-Mart. The sad ironies of this are profound.

We preach, “You cannot serve God and mammon.” Yet, when the local retailer does not serve up our mammon with the proper Christian greeting, we take our maxed out credit cards and go buy our mammon elsewhere. We are using money to bribe if not outright extort retailers into making us more comfortable with our own convictions. We have become Simon the Sorcerer for the new millennium. We are telling retailers “say what pleases me, and I will give you money.” When the world will not give us what we want, we whine and complain like spoiled children. Our boycott is little more than sophisticated temper tantrum. Miffed, we sign our petitions and take our money to the closest store that will gladly tell us what we want to hear as long as we bring our money.

Geez, the stories of what goes on in schools is unbelievable. I'm glad my kids are out of school, but I have grandkids in there now. It's hard to imagine what the future will bring.

Male Bovine Fecal Effluvia.Objecting to retailers' active burying of the reason for the season is not being "too lazy to get off their fat butts and shine a little light themselves."

Methinks you need a premise check.

Methinks you're being a tad defensive. Does this mean you're just sitting back expecting the government and retailers to spread the message of Christmas on your behalf? Sounds like it to me.

Wow...Christian taliban here on Free Republic? The muslims also think God commands them to make non-muslims "think and act" like muslims.

Wow, someone who is clueless about history and reality.
Besides, the original poster of this thread is supposedly a Pastor.
No REAL pastor would speak like that.
You're defending a troll.

My philosophy exactly. Unfortunately, my town is full of elitist SOB's who don't realize when they're being incredibly rude or petty and certainly won't apologize for even the most grievous of errors.

I've got a burqua just your size!

Let me break out the Crayolas so you will be sure to understand.

Either Jesus is the Son of God and there is only one triune God or what the Muslims say is true. The Muslims deny the deity of Christ.

I would not be so sanguine to be drawing a moral equivalence between Christianity and Islam. It's one or the other.

Choose.

No real pastor would speak like that? Yeah...right. I guess your pastor is just sweetness and light and never points out the moral faults of American Christians. the ugly truth is that Christians in America as a group are...LAZY. We've turned over our role in society to government and demanded respect while we whine.

Choose what?

I don't know what brand of Christianity YOU practice but having lived in a Muslim theocracy for many years, in my opinion, it's a heck of a lot closer to Islam and the Christianity of the dark ages than the spirit of Christ.

No real pastor would say the stupid garbage the hony pastor troll said.
IF you knew anything about REAL Bible believing Christians, you'd know immediately that the so-called pastor is a troll directly because of what he said.

How come everyone else knows this guy is a liar troll but you?

I don't know...perhaps for the same reason so many people on this thread don't recognize the truth in what he said?

What truth? Are you deliberately being obtuse or do you just not know any better? Do you REALLY think it's the job of the federal government to promote Christianity? Do you REALLY think it's the obligation of retailers to spread the Christmas message in a way that is pleasing to you?

You're so defensive! Is that because he hit so very close to home? Is it because you're sitting on your butt grumbling about those evil retailers taking the Christ out of Christmas as if it were the function of the retail world to convert the masses to Christianity? I'll bet you slam your first on the dinner table and bemoan the fact that the government is no longer allowed to lead millions of school children every day in prayer. All those poor infidel children that aren't going to receive the word of God unless the government presents it to them.

If the earliest of Christians had to depend on government and merchants to spread the Word of God in their behalf, we wouldn't be having a conversation about Christianity, would we? Did they sit back and whine because they had to do it on their own at the risk of their very lives?
