Paris is Burning
Conservative Thoughts ^ | November 3, 2001 | John Kuethe

The Parisian suburbs which are heavily populated by North African and Muslim immigrants and their French-born children, continued to be the scene of increasingly violent riots. Youths ramped up the violence for a seventh straight night. Despite the presence of armed riot police, they committed acts ranging from clashing with police to burning vehicles in at least 10 Paris region towns.

Their tried and tru policy of appeasement has prevented them from integrating the muslim immigrants into their society. Now they have entire communities that are little Islamo-fascist development centers. As was the case in WWI and WWII, the French will be one of the first to fall in the global war on terror.

"Their tried and tru policy of appeasement has prevented them from integrating the muslim immigrants into their society."

Actually, Instapundit has am interesting emial from an Aussie living in Paris who claims we are confusing the French approach with the multi-cultural PCBS of the Netherlands, that this is more about lost local economic opportunity than the fruition of appeasement policies.

Instapundit Post:

ANOTHER UPDATE: Reader Joel Shepherd emails:

"It's not an intefada. I'm an Australian SF author temporarily living in Paris; sadly I don't have my own blog (yet), but I'm writing a freelance article on liberte-cherie, the French libertarian organisation (www.liberte-cherie.com). I'm no expert, but I'm learning some things.

The problem in France is not the same as in the UK or the Netherlands. There, there's been an overdose of PC multi culturalism... but American critics are wrong to assign that to France. France HAS insisted on integration, as seen by the controversial ban on headscarves in French schools. And most French muslims do consider themselves French, to varying degrees, and Islamic extremism is pretty small thing here (there was far more protest against the headscarf ban outside of France than inside). So it's not an intefada.

There's just no damn jobs. White college grads can't get jobs, what hope do immigrants from regions with bad schools have? I think this is more like the LA Rodney King riots -- there's people there who want the French dream, just as in LA people wanted the American dream, but they just don't see it when they look around, and they resent the fact enormously. They can't change schools to get a better education because the government says you have to go to the school where you live, and they live where they do because of the zoning laws... which I'm no expert about, but I do know that the government owns 30 percent of all housing in France, and poor immigrants basically live where they're told. The government tries to give them everything and does it extremely badly, there's no upward mobility, and it doesn't breed a happy community. Religion exacerbates the feeling of exclusion, I'm sure, but the rioting seems mostly driven by economics and bad social policy.

So yeah, it's a stupid French government problem, but not the one some American critics are ascribing... however attractive it might be to do so."

Thanks for the update. Perhaps they are just the latest victim of Islam plain and simple.

Curious that France was the first to fall in WWI and WWII and now appears to be the first country taken over in the WOT.

Oh wait. Its France. D'uh.

Reading this article and pondering the English language immersion issue in the US makes a VERY strong argument that NOT requiring immigrants to learn English is inviting serious trouble.

Ze French brought this on themselves. Let's hope Paris burns to the ground!

Tip the Eiffel Tower over so it points to EuroDisney so that planes flying over will know where to go.

The aussie could be mis-reading events too. We'll see when the dust settles. I tend to believe that French appeasment is the primary contributing factor. These places were "no-go" points for Police in the past.

So this is really a referendum on socialism?

Interesting thought but I don't see that as the entire story.

Does "the West" claim France?

If this is a fight, then the loser should have to keep France.

Gosh, I thought socialism fixed all that and Europe was a paradise!

I do. The Muslims might burn Paris before I have the chance to go there and defile it. :)
