The California legislature became the first elected body in the US to approve gay marriage, passing the bill in the Assembly 41-35 and setting up a conundrum for Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. The bill defies a vote from five years ago, when Californians overwhelmingly voted to approve a measure which specified that marriage should remain between one man and one woman:
The bill's supporters compared the legislation to earlier civil rights campaigns, including efforts to eradicate slavery and give women the right to vote."Do what we know is in our hearts," said the bill's sponsor, San Francisco Democrat Mark Leno. "Make sure all California families will have the same protection under the law." ...
But opponents repeatedly cited the public's vote five years ago to approve Proposition 22, an initiative put on the ballot by gay marriage opponents to keep California from recognizing same-sex marriages performed in other states or countries.
"History will record that you betrayed your constituents and their moral and ethical values," said Republican Assemblyman Jay La Suer.

Arnold will surely veto this crud. It was the Freebie for the Dems.
This is the 'Katrina' for the Dems. They will incure the wrath of the voting public.
Let's hope so!

They're really concerned with their job security aren't they.
I like the closing:
Californians might ask themselves why they bother with a legislature at all. Clearly the people's branch of government has ceased representing the people in the country's most populous state. Will Californians finally demand sane reapportionment that creates actual competitive elections, or continue the disconnect between their representatives and their politics?
They know that they have nothing to fear from the voters,....see the closing !
That will be the finalizing factor!

Re: Silence from the Gov....
per KFI just now, they said he (Gov) said this should go to the courts....
Nite all.

Gay and lesbian advocates welcomed the assembly's decision, and urged Mr Schwarzenegger to sign it into law.
The office of Mr Schwarzenegger, who has previously opposed gay marriage, issued a statement saying the governor believes the issue is best decided in the courts.
Nighty night and thanks for the ping.
Rats....Arnooold isn't vetoing squat!
See post #12!
Nite all.
Get ON THE PHONES in the morning everyone!!!!!!!
Dang it, this just MIGHT be the tipping point for us moving out of this state.
Governor? Ya reading this???????
The bill, which would change California's legal definition of marriage from "a civil contract between a man and a woman" to a "civil contract between two persons," now goes to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. He has signaled that he will veto it.
(snip)
After the vote, Schwarzenegger spokeswoman Margita Thompson said: "The people spoke when they passed Proposition 22. The issue subsequently went to the courts. The governor believes the courts are the correct venue for this decision to be made. He will uphold whatever decision the court renders."
I usually take the libertarian approach on gay marriage. Frankly, the whole issues bores me. But I do find the wording of the bill amusing. If California changes marriage to be between two persons, does this mean that corporations (which are 'persons' under the law) can be married?
