Air America caller from N.O. blasts N.O. mayor and Governor (Caller was Julia Reed)
al franken show ^ | Sep 2 05 | Julia Reed

Rachel Maddow as sub host for Al Franken, was interviewing Julia Reed, a well-known writer who lives in New Orleans. Reed said she was "ashamed" to have the mayor and governor she has. Both of them blew it big time. The mayor, she claimed, was on radio Monday night downplaying the situation, and saying that people breaking into pharmacies was not a big deal. She said New Orleans is unsafe most of the time -- cops can't stop the gangs -- so officials should have known a hurricane would create big-time lawlessness

She said homes on St. Charles Ave are now occupied by people who didn't own them. "Desperate people" replied Maddow -- No, "lawbreakers," said Reed.

A later caller complained that Reed sounded like a Rush Limbaugh

Then vote for Hillary!

Or better yet, run for office.

... but I wondered where they'd get all the drivers.

Well, of the 35 or 40 passengers on the bus, I'm sure they could have found 1 or 2 who could drive it.

>>>With enough foresight I suppose they could have crosstrained police or National Guard to drive them but with turnover even that would be a daunting task. >>>

Enough Foresight? A weeks warning? Years of KNOWING what would happen if a hurricane of that magnitude hit? How much freaking foresight do you want? Every mayor that has been in office should have had a MAJOR EVACUATION PLAN IN ACTION IN CASE THIS VERY THING HAPPENED. Now watch all the finger pointing.

Who's covering it up?

Probably noone. But I'm sure they're not volunteering the information.

Are you kidding? This jerk has gotten ON THE RADIO and using four letter words blasted the President. This guy is their new God.

LOL! Good! They can have him. I'll vote for him as mayor of Los Angeles or San Francisco. They deserve each other.

"I agree. I LOVE President Bush, but he fumbled this one right one along with the Dept Homeland Security..."

I just don't see what more could have been done at the federal level. Are the feds going to rush in and seize control of local governments everytime a hurricane heads toward the U.S.? What exactly do you folks think the feds should have done in the middle of a CAT 4 hurricane? Just curoius.

"Though, he may have changed his mind after the town started to flood."

Moved them to the 1st Floor perhaps!

I guess that makes them fair and balanced. I listened to bits of the Majority Report the last two days driving home from work. The talker is a failed comedian named Chris something or other. In the short time I have listened I learned that:

Bush is responsible for the hurricane.
Bush is responsible for the inadequate preparation for the hurricane.
Bush is responsible for the fact that there are hurricane-related fatalities.
Bush is responsible for the slow response for the hurricane.

Bush is responsible for all this because:

He undertaxes the wealthy.
He sent the Louisiana National Guard to fight his illegal war in Iraq.
He hates the environment.
He hates people of color.
He wants Democrats to die.
He takes too many vacations.
He is stupid.
He is disconnected from regular Americans.

I guess one caller with a different point of view evens it all out.

I heard it on the radio too. A Fox affiliate reporterette said the police told the people in her hotel to get out of town that the levee had broken and that they were releasing jail prisoners and that they could no longer guarantee the safety of those in the hotel. She was on her cell phone reporting this as she traveled to Houston.

Move over Sheehan, the left has a new liberal darling in Nagin.

Cindy got 5 minutes more than the alotted 15 mins.

I am afraid Nagin is in for double time at least.

I agree. I LOVE President Bush, but he fumbled this one right one along with the Dept Homeland Security(not feeling real confident in the event of a terrorist on my town right now) right down to the Mayor. EVERYONE screwed this up.

The federal government had NO authority to step in until a disaster has been declared of the local government has requested help. Part of being a good leader is knowing when to ask for help and doing it early enough to make a difference. Part of being a good leader is NOT stepping into a lower level situation that is not a problem (yet) and throwing your weight around. The mistakes were made at a low level not a high one.

How many drivers would have taken their loved ones on the buses too! or at least had family members follow with vehicles if they had them.

I was commenting about buses before the storm hit, dreading the dome idea.

She says that Nagin has lost control of the city, and Blanco has lost control of the state

My impression is that neither of them had any control to lose.

Mark Morial - former Mayor of N.O. from a few years back - just as corrupt politically, but a better leader than Nagin.

This statement is totally ignorant. Nagin is not corrupt. Morial is not a better leader. Morial would be just as clueless and ineffectual.

"..but I wondered where they'd get all the drivers."

NO sits beneath the water, has been since time memorial, Hurricanes in that area are no stranger, the levee has always meant a threat to flooding, a PLAN for this type of emergency would have provided for drivers. Obviously, Nagin's Plan was equivalent to Kerry's 'Plan'.

"Well, of the 35 or 40 passengers on the bus, I'm sure they could have found 1 or 2 who could drive it."

But how would they have gotten it to the projects to get the passengers?

I'm sure some of them could have gotten it to a chop shop, but it's a little harder to drive one full of people in the less-than-perfect conditions they'd have been in. The City lawyers would never have okayed that plan.

Until things collapse, the lawyers still run the world.

I have no idea of New Orleans politics. Who is Morial?

Marc Morial the last mayor of New Orleans (who happens to be the son of "Dutch" Morial, an as yet EARLIER mayor of NOLA)...
