"dispatch a few ground troops to the source of the rockets? For starters..." Invade a friendly country with arms? Oh, you're getting good at this.

If we turn tail and run everytime they use guerilla tactics we're never going to clean this up.
Where the hell are you getting this crap? We DON'T. The Naval ship in question ONLY had a handful of Marines aboard. If you DON'T know your damned situation you DON'T commit your forces unless absolutely necessary.
Another damned armchair general ping.....does anyone know a Naval officer on FR that could explain this situation to the "general" here?

We have good working relationships currently with both, but I feel that is based off of nothing more then mutal needs or a relationship of convience.
we DON'T have friendly relationships with Syria right now. I believe that Syria is still under US sanctions. But we DO consider Jordan a friend in the area.

Invade? I thought they were our allies - what no joint operation? With friends like these...
To: J. Worthington Witfellow
They were in a Jordain Port. The attackers were most likely terrorist. If those ships fired back on a Friendly country and kill some innocent Jordians we would be looking like Sh*t to the rest of the world right about now. The Jordians will probably take care of this themselves and share any info they got on them with us. That is why we need to be patient.

A handful of marines - you're right - we were way outmatched by the army of rocket launchers.

WTF are you talking about? YOU are the one that is talking about invading....

You think it would have been better for them to sit there and let the terrorist continue firing from the bushes until they scored a hit?

They couldnt have POSSIBLY known the situation within the port itself. There could have been equivalent to a platoon of terrorists waiting for them. Besides that would be invading a country we are currently NOT at war with. The Naval captain did the EXACT right thing by getting out dodge. His ship was intact, his people were unhurt, his perogative was to get moving. Let the Jordanians figure it out.
Your armchair generalship needs some work.

Miscommunication - the bane of friendly discourse. I meant that in response to your statement - defending ourselves should not be construed as an act of "invading." I think we toss around the term "ally" pretty loosely these days.

if they would have kept firing we would have found them with our handful of marines, no?

You definition of "invading" and defense of politically motivated war strategy needs work my friend...

I would consider troops running around under arms to be an invasion and I am SURE the Jordanians would as well.

Explanton please....
It's amazing how the trolls ALWAYS step in it eventually....

you are correct Syria is under sanctions currently. as for Jordon I agree that we (Diplomatically speaking) consider it a friendly nation. My concern with Jordon is how much control do they have of the radicals in their population and do they care to control the radicals or give them a short lease.
I have not heard strong condemnations of the recent attacks by either government. I am beginning to believe that their lack of commentary and condemnation of these attacks is silent acceptance.
I hope that I am wrong and that there are forces at work to stop these guys that took these shots. But I fear that we are going to see this more and more often around the world including here before things get better

But as an ally, why not a US-Jordanian response? Anyone??
To: Americanwolf
I don't know...
The Jordanian King seems to be a good guy (especially if you are a Star Trek fan).
They may not be talking because they are searching...
that said Zarqawi is a Jordanian who has been on the run or in jail for something like 15 years or so
