What message do we send, when we are fired upon and instead of fighting back, we weigh anchor and run? I have complete faith in our armed services, men and women, but is politics hamstringing our ability to defend ourselves?

Where the hell are we going to attack?
What are you going to attack WITH? There were no assets to pursue the individuals, they would have been going into a FRIENDLY country AND a ships best defense is it's mobility.....
To: J. Worthington Witfellow
We are not (yet) at war with Jordan.
Calm down.

when rockets fired from land at ships, ships need to move. Let land-based units handle the enemy.
Not moving ships away from rocket range would be a career-ender for someone.
To: J. Worthington Witfellow
Who do you suggest we fire at? Do we know for sure where the shots came from and who fired them?

Those who fired the rockets perhaps? Why didn't we launch a helo or two, dispatch a few ground troops to the source of the rockets? For starters...
To: J. Worthington Witfellow
Who exactly are we supposed to fire back on? Did the shooters hang out for awhile waving their arms and yelling "Yo, over here Yankee dogs"? If they did, I must have missed that part of the story.

Military force is a blunt Ax
You gotta find the guy before you can shoot back
When being shot at by a sniper, holding your position is not always the best course, especially when he's got you in his cross-hairs and you don't know where he is.

Against who? The terrorist aren't exactly world renowned for putting on a uniform and fighting like men. We still aren't sure who did this.

So taking pot shots at us, with no repercussions is the norm?
At what time, relative to the San Francisco event, did this occur?

Cowtowing to terrorists is better?

Who said it is? Chances are these guys are allied with Zarqawi in Iraq. We will retaliate and you better believe the Jordanians will as well.
To: Jaysun
If we turn tail and run everytime they use guerilla tactics we're never going to clean this up.

Patience grasshopper,
absence of evidence is not evidence of absence
To: MikeinIraq
Mike,
I don't disagree with you often, but I have to on this one. I am not sure that we consider either Jordon or Syria friendly countries. We have good working relationships currently with both, but I feel that is based off of nothing more then mutal needs or a relationship of convience.
I will agree though they are not culpable in the attack itself, unless it is proven that their police/paramilitary or regular military assisted in some way.
That is doubtful though.
It is best that we wait till we identify the target and either arrest or surgical strike. That is the only way that we can right now fight this war.
I cannot see us returning to the WWII tactics of leveling cities in retalation.
