Justice Sandra Day O'Conner announced her retirement from the United States Supreme Court today.

This is the first time since 1994 that there has been a vacancy on the world's most powerful bench. This will also be the first time that bloggers will be able to monitor the mainstream media's portrayal of all of Bush's potential nominees. Every negative innuendo, inaccurate summary and unnecessary label will be documented and exposed.

This will be rabid political partisanship at its worst, and will settle once and for all the strength of the Senate filibuster compromise.

Knuckles are cracking on both sides of the political fence as the pajamahadeen prepares for the ideological intafada. This is going to get really, really ugly.

Here's a brief summary of what has already been occurring on both sides of the aisle in preparation for a vacancy....

So we have at least one, and possibly two vacancies (if Rehnquist follows suit) to fill before October. This is going to be a really nasty fight.

Rush just mentioned Bob Woodruff of ABC getting input from Linda Douglas on O'Connor's announcement. She said something to the sort that American's “were not that aware that approving judges was such a contentious proposition.”

I swear... the MSM not only thinks we're stupid... but that we NEVER follow politics!

Any bets Bush will appoint a real disappointment? (from a conservative perspective)

I confess to being concerned. O'Conner was far from a favorite of mine but Souter and Kennedy had been really horrible.

Bush needs to let Rove not-too-secretly float around an hyper-conservative name that has no chance of confirmation. He needs to make it appear that the President is adamant about having this person confirmed. This will throw the curve so far to the right that other conservatives will appear acceptable in comparison. That way, the Dems will confirm a more centrist conservative and feel like they actually scored a victory against Bush. But President Bush and the country will still win in the end. a Supreme Court Justice who doesn't subscribe to the "living constitution" school of thought.

O'Conner was a loose cannon; on any given day she could go either way on any case. What we now have is a Supreme Court with Breyer, Stevens, Souter, Kennedy, Ginsburg on the LEFT and Rehnquist, Scalia and Thomas on the RIGHT. Even if the Prez appoints (and the damn Senate confirms) another guy like Thomas, we will still be left with a five/four split the WRONG way. And its a good bet that Rehnquist will go very soon. So, then we have to fight like hell just to keep the 5/4 split once again. I do not see the SC going the right way during the rest of Bush's term. And should a RAT succeed to the presidency in '08, I fear for the Republic over the next ten years.

No offense but you are a little late in your concerns for the Republic. It is gone and the last 5 years have not exactly made any progress to turn the ship of State. At best, at the very best they have let up on the gas a little, but just a little.

At this point I think the only way to wake up this nation is for the worst of the worst to make this nation see where it went wrong. Another Repugnat in the WH will just give us more of "boil the frog slowly" policies.
