My parents are Republican; I was raised on conservative values that defined the Republican Party. I have always been proud of belonging to the same political party that was home to Ronald Reagan, the greatest President of my time, and I believe history will dictate his all time greatness among U.S. presidents.
Recent events however, have created doubt in my belief that the Republican Party is the true party of conservative ideals. Dont get me wrong; the Democrat Party is nothing more than an elitist, corrupt, immoral party that uses manipulation and self-serving ideologies for personal political gain. However, Moderates (spineless wimps who would sell out their constituency to maintain political positioning), are damaging the Republican Party with their cant we all get along, lets share the power, we need bi-partisanship ideas, led by our primary sell-out, Sen. John McCain.
Its not popular to condemn a war hero, and McCain IS a war hero, no one will question his service to our country and his commitment to those who served with him. That was some 30 or 40 years ago, and his political career is far less noble, sacrificing our first amendment right to free speech, which he risked his life in Vietnam to protect, with McCain / Fiengold legislation, but this is not about John McCain.
Sen. Arlen Specter, who has served those of us who reside in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for years, lost my respect and vote when he sold out his counterparts in the House with his failure to convict President Clinton following impeachment proceedings. In this case, our Senator disregarded Clintons perjury and obstruction of justice, which denied Paula Joness her Constitutional right to have her case heard in court, but this is not about Arlen Specter.
The group of seven Senators initiated by Trent Lott and carried to fruition by John McCain, negotiated a compromise with Democrats to avoid the triggering of the so-called nuclear option, which would prevent Democrats from filibustering judicial nominations, continuing a practice that had not been done in the 214 years of our Constitution prior to Republicans gaining control of the Senate.
Regardless of the controversy surrounding Bush v. Gore in the 2000 election, since then President Bush has won a convincing re-election, Republicans gained 6 seats in the Senate, and increased its majority in the House. This was accomplished not because voters wanted compromise, but because voters wanted a more conservative approach in policy, and the best way to accomplish this was to elect Republicans, even if it meant voting for the Lincoln Chaffees and Olympia Snows of the world. They were the least liberal of the candidates available at the time.
Increasingly, Republican politicians are mired in moderation, disregarding the desires of the voters, consistent in their desire to maintain political positioning, attempting to court voters who traditionally vote for those residing on the other side of the isle to increase their voter base. This is evident by our governments unwillingness to seal our borders from the insurgency of illegal aliens, for fear they may offend Hispanics, the fastest growing voter base. Even President Bush, a man I greatly respect, sold out our citizens who volunteered to peacefully protect our borders from illegals, calling them vigilantes, to win respect of Mexicans.
The abandonment of conservative values by Republican politicians will prove to be devastating for the party if they fail to do what voters empowered them to do. The tables can be turned. Never forget, Ronald Reagan was once a democrat!
We still have Trent Lott, don't we?
Congressmen can be "dethroned" but it is harder to remove them from office.
And McCain is the media's darling boy.
Someone should make a tv-movie about the Keating Five.
Very evocative. Nice use of images.
It's hard enough to identify referents in serious writing without running into number problems.
I still haven't seen it.
I HAVE seen this new documentary on Robert Moog:
It is excellent.
This blog by Pershing reminds me of that quotation from the Shakeaspear play (forget which one) which starts out:
"Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow,
Keeps in this petty pace from day to day,
To the last syllable of recorded time..."
and ends with:
"It is a tale told by an idiot,
Full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing."
In other words, this Pershing column is mindless dribble.
At the very least, it parrots the same thing countless self-annointed experts have ranted about since politics was first invented some four thousand years ago.
Now, that's not to absolve the Republican Party of faults.
But if someone feels that strongly that THEY are privy to the absolute political truth,
Then by golly don't stand around and whine.
Get in there and run for office, or donate your magic money to the person with whom you believe.
Bottom line: I am sick and tired of this same 'ol rant that "the GOP is a bunch of woosies so I am gonna quit."
Even with its moderates, the Republicans are light years ahead of the leftist Democratic Party and if given half a chance, will cause a net improvement in the economy and American culture.
Metaphor and analogy don't contribute much to actual meaning, but maybe they can entice someone to take a closer look.
Not sure about McCain being a war hero..
Audie Murphy was a war hero.
Whenever someone brings up "McCain was a POW" I bring up Keating.
As far as I am concerned that used up his "Get out of Jail Free" card and you only get one in my book.
Because he is the media's beloved bringing him down is both hard and even more necessary.
Listen to the link on post #109.

Thank you very much for the info!! If I go missing for a few, it's because of you. LOL!
irked and stymied by the incessant rain, otherwise well.
I wish it WOULD rain here.
No sleep, stupid yard-sale, kids running up my arm and it's been threatening to rain all day and WON'T
The air is so tense you could cut it with a knife.
The media will remain quiet about the Keating Five for now. They will wait until he accepts the Republican Nomination and then string him up.
Even if McCain would then win in 2008, he would be tarnished. A win-win for the media, a lib in office or a dirty RINO.
yeah, but...
1. I really need to mow my lawn
2. I really need to transport some 1x12 boards to make some VERY needed shelves in the office, but I can't risk them getting soaked
The Bush family talks a good game, but they will break your heart.
The Bush-bots are going to freak out when he nominates a Souter-type to replace O'conner. Rhenquist will be a rock-ribbed conservative, but Bush will not overturn Roe vs Wade because they think it will hurt the party. That's why Bush the elder stuck Souter in there.
My cynicism will be justified on this subject.
Better than spending the day blogging on a "post and run" thread (although there isn't the kind of bloody infighting that a troll might have hoped for). And this thread hasn't been a total washout. We've learned about Hitchcock, Dali, and Theremins today.
Fully agree.
McCain, a Naval pilot, simply got shot down while (?) on a bombing run.
I give him props for his conduct while in the North Vietnam prison camp for (?) six years.
But in my mind, that is not the same as being a "hero" during combat.
Now, as someone who never served in the military, I must ask forebearance from all you military veterans aout there.
But that is how I feel about McCain, who perhaps served in noble fashion some 40 years ago, but is now embarassing his President and his party.
