DeWine: Compromise Caveat (If "extraordinary circumstances" unfounded Nuke Option Still on Table)
Think Progress ^ | May 23, 2005

This is important. Sen. Mike DeWine (R-OH) during the press conference:

Some of you who are looking at the language may wonder what some of the clauses mean. The understanding is – and we don’t think this will happen – but if an individual senator believes in the future that a filibuster is taking place under something that’s not extraordinary circumstances, we of course reserve the right to do what we could have done tomorrow which is to cast a yes vote for the constitutional option.

Its a lefty source, but the news is good.

DeWine and Warner could probably be persuaded to vote with Frist if it came to it.

I wonder what blackmail the Dems have on him?

DeWhine is already seeing the backlash, and is trying to weasel out of his corrupt position.

Forget demonrats... it's the G*ddamn RINO's that will be the death of this Nation.

It's a cover his butt statement since the fool realizes he has an election in '06. He didn't have to sign on to this, he chose to, this can be tossed into the trash far as I'm concerned. The only signed statement I recognize is the one where he authorized reputations to be slandered, the President's authority to be stripped and his own to be increased in an elite unelected 14 cabal.

When an opponent is named, I'm contributing against him.

DeWine is a team player... which leads me to suspect that the Republican caucus supported this move.

Give the Dims one last chance to use their filibuster toy properly. If not, THEN it gets taken away from them.

Let's face it, these 'Clubbies' don't have the stones now, nor will they acquire any in the future to tinker with the creaking 'Traditions' of the Senate (Note: No mention of Constitutionally endorsed actions, just some nebulous Traditions)

They are too busy patting each other on the back and attending the same parties to seriously ruffle each others feathers. The illusion of principals on most of their parts is just so much theater for the masses IMO.

I love all the threats I see people making against the Republicans who voted for this... remember all their threats against McCain? He ran for re-election virtually unopposed in 2004 - both in the primary and general.

Do Sen. Graham and Sen. DeWine belong on the JUDICIARY COMMITTEE if they are part of this "agreement"?

Doesn't seem right or proper to me. But, then, you don't even want to begin to know how I feel about this betrayal ... I mean deal.

"This is important."

No, this is completely unimportant. Senators ALWAYS reserve the right to do whatever the hell they want to, so there is no news here.

The other reason this is unimportant is that DeWine and the rest of these contemptible pukes (with the POSSIBLE) exception of Graham) will never stand up to the Rats on this one. They might whine a little, but they'll never walk the walk.

An utter disaster in the Senate today.

You're right that these threats seem completely empty. But if we go after enough of the pukes, there is a chance that one might lose a primary. The key is to find a good opponent, which will be very hard but not impossible. If one puke loses his or her job over this, especially in a GOP primary, others might come to their senses in the next congress.

What we need to do is keep our dander up enough to get new Republican (not RINO) Senators in wherever we can. There must be races where the Republicans have a good chance of take over and our ire (and money) can be put to good use tipping the balance.

Also, I think two of the Democrat Senators from Alabama (I think) may not save themselves with this deal. I'd love to hear from people there who know if these seats can be taken.

And, finally, do what ever it takes to make sure that McCain NEVER, EVER, EVER, EVER, EVER, EVER gets anywhere near the presidency. That has to be done primary by primary.

Let me guess who will determine what these extraordinary circumstances are.

Fascinating. DeWine and Graham are really the power-brokers here. Warner, Specter, McCain, Collins, and Snowe are all pretty much beyond our ability to pressure:

McCain because of his personality disorder.
Collins and Snowe because of parochial Maine politics.
Warner because of his age
Specter because this is probably his last term.

DeWine and Graham, on the other hand are young and ambitious. They cannot afford to stray too far from the conservative base.

It will be very interesting to see how these two wield their new influence in the coming weeks and months. My guess is that they will do whatever they can to regain our trust.

PS. I think that a number of the Senators in this "deal" want to be in McCain's scope for appointments etc, under the mistaken impression he still has a chance.

We can take care of that, too, by insuring that McCain FAILS.

To have someone get close to the presidency that would pull both this stunt on the elected President and would treat the nominees in this cavalier manner - IS NOT EVEN THINKABLE.

Again, we have to start planning, now, primary by primary.

NOT ONE PENNY!!!

I'm angry enough to pledge money to real conservatives who will run against these RINO's and replace them. How about $100.00 a head?

I encourage everyone to attack!

I will volunteer to leave my law practice and go to Ohio or South Carolina to work for their GOP opponents.

The two Rats are from Arkansas, or one from Arkansas and one from Louisiana.

You're right that we must not give up. We must knock out more Rats, and some RINOs. And yes, absolutely, destroy McCain's presidential campaign. He is unacceptable. Even if he's the only one who can beat Hellary, I'd rather have her. Otherwise, the GOP would be emasculated, and the American people's long-delayed wake up call would be delayed another four, or eight years.

The word for McCain is: Scorched earth, baby. You're toast.

DeWine's career must end in the next Ohio Republican primary if conservatism is to remain viable in this nation.
