Maybe the fight over Bush's judicial nominees in the Senate is over, and then again maybe Harry Reid is just trying to buy some time. In a statement, the top liberal said, "Let's take a step away from the precipice. Let's try cooperation, rather than confrontation, which seems to be the hallmark of what we've been doing here lately." A step away from the precipice? Maybe somebody should remind Harry that he, and his party put themselves on the precipice.

They're not backing down - they know the Repub Congress-critters have no backbone.
I think the Dems want to bury the Filibuster plan because it won't serve them in the end (should they regain the Senate) However, I remember Schumer saying "We'll stop them in Committee".

Is anyone still naive enough to believe that the Democrats will do or say anything for a purpose other than to stall until they can put one of their own in the office of the President?
They have a dilemma now as polls indicate that abortion is not acceptable to the majority and that means that sure votes based on the single issue mentality have been lost.
The smart move is to let the Repubs seat a judge, let Roe vs Wade be overturned and blame it on the Republicans "who don't believe in women's rights". That'll bring the lost votes back to the fold and they can campaign as women's rights advocates...letting the abortion issue fall by the wayside.
