I remember some feminist in the late 70s actually pushing hard to to change "woman" to "woperit." The rationale was that wo-man was clearly sexist; wo-person only slightly less so (implying male offspring). Thus, the gender neutral "woperit!.
I remember my aunt telling stories about this around the dinner table. Years later, I always assumed it was one of those xeroxed jokes that went around the office in the days before email.
But now you say it's so!
My aunt worked for Ma Bell, back in the day, and she would tell the wildest stories, many of which ended up being recorded on snopes, things like the snake in the coat pocket and spiders that lay their eggs in your face.
HAHAHA!! I missed that one! How twisted feminism became. There really was nothing wrong with its basic early tenets (equal pay, fair credit laws, etc.) but the movement became coopted by the Socialist Workers Party and the radical lesbians (this line always got a big hand at NOW conferences: "some construction worker asked me if I was a lesbian. I said, are you the alternative?" -- I must have heard that stale old canard a thousand times, and the feminists went wild over it every time. Ugh.
