Thanks to The British Board of Film Classification James Bond can carry on smoking.
Having seen off all manner of Russian agents, evil geniuses and homicidal henchmen, superspy James Bond emerged triumphant in the face of the anti-smoking lobby. Anti-tobacco groups had lobbied the British Board of Film Classification, to crack down on what they see as the glamorisation of smoking. A scene in Bond film Die Another Day in which Pierce Brosnan lights up a cigar was cited as a glaring example. The BBFC ruled that 007 was unlikely to encourage youngsters to follow suit. afp
According to The Telegraph, the board rejected calls from health groups to cut film scenes showing actors smoking saying that such drastic action smacked of "the nanny state" and there was little public demand for the change.
The board added that it felt no qualms about adult films containing smoking scenes as long as they were not glamorised and not part of a deal between a film and tobacco company.
"It becomes ridiculous if you can't put smoking in a film in context. If you were making a film set in the trenches in the First World War, it would look very odd not to have smoking. Likewise period films in the 1940s and 1950s, when a lot more people smoke, " a board spokesman was quoted as saying.
"If you were remaking Casablanca, Rick's Bar wouldn't be Rick's Bar if it wasn't incredibly smoky and I think we feel that it is absolutely fine for James Bond to smoke. However, I don't know what we would do if Harry Potter took up smoking in his next film," he added. (ANI)
PING
James Bond must stop now! The zillions of people he's forced the evils of second hand smoke on are irreparably damaged. I hope he can live with himself. :)
Denote sarcasm.
Wow - this makes 3 good news pieces this week for our side!!!!
There's not a sarcastic bone in your body, now is there????
Thanks for the ping!!
How did you guess? :)
I know you too well................
Dadgummit! I only saw two!
But I'm happy!
Now Bond films will probably be R rated.
They are actually thinking about doing that with films depicting smoking---idiots all!
This, Washington Supreme Court, and Virginia Senate killing smoking ban.
I don't think any articles were posted about the VA ban death, because I was notified about it on some other VA related threads. I just tossed into conversations on other smoking related threads.
Nah...it's just Stanton Glantz' current money-making pipe dream project.
---idiots all!
