I think it is amazing that in such ancient times these rules were given to help create moral values. The guidelines have been used to create law for society ever since. It is sad they can not be given their due in our courtrooms. And personally on the question of whether God is a party pooper....I don't buy into the mantra of "If you grin you sin". Drinking a little here and there in moderation IMHO is fine. I have lots of fun playing my guitar and singing...fun is not a sin. However some sins can be fun!

This approach towards sin is very utilitarian in its form and frustrating to no end. In one of my ethics classes back in college, my professor told us a story of this dog his neighbor owned and it would love to lick anti-freeze...whenever it dripped from the car or if he found it in the garage somewhere. This anecdote concluded with his assertion that a person cannot with any legitimacy claim that just because something is pleasurable that it is good to do. Sure, the dog got a kick out of the anti-freeze, but the stuff would kill him if his owner hadn't kept a close eye and kept pulling him away.
Would someone say God is a party pooper for not letting us shoot ourselves in the foot, no matter how fun we may think it is?

Human history has proven that you violate the ten commandments AT YOUR OWN PERIL. They are not the way to heaven. They are the way to a more robust and fruitful life. They are like a "maintenence manual" for the care and feeding of the human machine.
Yeah, it takes work to obey the commandments. It takes work to change the oil in your car, but calling someone a "party pooper" because they say you should change your oil every 7k miles or so is a little silly - and narcissistic.
