I am at my lowest low

We live in a society where cash comes before being human

Dear Socialist Worker, I am a single woman, currently unemployed, with a home-based business that is barely bringing in any income. I have always supported myself by working in nightclub industries as a promoter and makeup artist, and writing resumes (my business).

In September, when I was about five-and-a-half months pregnant, I could no longer work in the nightclub industry, which was 90 percent of my income and allowed me to afford my rent and pay most of my bills. I tried to look for a job, but a lot of places would not hire me because of my pregnancy.

I fell three months behind on my rent--about $3,300. I have lived in my apartment for seven-and-a-half years and have always paid the rent. My landlord recently gave me an eviction letter asking me to come up with the money or leave in three days. I wrote a letter explaining that I was due to give birth and, as of January 1, would be back to work and caught up.

I explained and apologized for any inconvenience that I may have caused. But he and his lawyer went ahead and started the eviction process.

I am at my lowest low. I cry every night because I have no support. The social service people said they will not provide any rental assistance because my rent is too high. But my rent is standard for a New York City apartment in a decent neighborhood.

I just can’t believe that in this country, there are people made homeless everyday, and that the law will allow a landlord or a judge or a lawyer to evict a pregnant woman and contribute to homelessness.

I could understand if I was working and refusing to pay rent. Then I would think that was the right action to take on his part. But I am showing an effort to pay, and I have a good reason.

It is sad that we live in a society where cash comes before being human. It is sad that we live in society that contributes to homelessness because someone has suffered a financial crisis or major setback.

I have called every charity in my area. Most of them tell me they have no funds or don’t provide funds. I called a lawyer to assist me in court. I explained that I am getting evicted, and all he could say to me is “I could represent you for $600.” I just told this man that I am being evicted--that means I have no money.

I was not able to afford an attorney, and the landlord got the upper hand. I was given the “choice” of coming up with almost $6,000 by February 28--that will include January and February rent and the back rent I owe. I have to start making a payment in the next 20 days of $500. If I am a day late, they will send the marshal to evict me. So, I am basically still in the same position.

I have been to the charities that I was told to go to. A lot of them say there is no money. The Salvation Army said they could only give me $600, but that is only if I could show them proof that I can come up with the rest. I tried to get a one-shot deal, but they said I needed to have a job to qualify to show how I will pay them back. If I had money and a job I would not be going to them! They made no sense.

We have billions to use for war, but no help or funds for individuals in need. It is sad that we call ourselves the richest country in the world. We are the poorest, because of our poor sense of humanity. Anonymous, New York City

Dear Anonymous,

I'll be happy to cut you some slack on your rent, even though that will impact my finances too. Just let me call the mayor first, and make sure he'll cut me some slack on my taxes.

Two other points: 1. NYC is a notoriously hard place to get evicted in (whicvh is part of the reason for high rents [outside of rent control] and high prices.

2. If she loves her child and would give him the best life possible, she would EASILY find an adopting family who would help with expenses. (Unless she is a documented narcotic drug user, then it becomes more difficult)

I think the point of the post was either:

1. To make me cry. Well, it failed, as it made me laugh at this woman's unbeleiveable narcissism.

2. To encourage us Freepers to pony up cash to help her in her time of need. Well, at least for me, it failed again. I wouldn't consider giving money to someone as short sighted and self-involved as this person unless she were related to me.

So, I guess she should turn to her friends in the nightclub industry or to her socialist friends. They might be more sympathetic to her feeling that her landlord ought to allow her to live rent-free for a few months; after all what's a few thousand dollars between landlord and tenant?

Condoms are free at planned parenthood, getting pregnant is not comparable to the war on terrorism.

Yes, the Socialt Workers Relief Fund would be the second place
I'd recommend. But, first, I'd ask Hubby (or dad, or partner, or whoever) for help. I'm sure the pregnancy didn't come from the cold creme.

And, knowing that rent was hard to make, I'd certainly talk to the landlord BEFORE I missed the payment date to see if I could work out some kind of extention.

Incidentally, in New York, landlords can't just put you out on the street. Eviction is a long, long process. Use the time to talk to someone at the ACLU or one of the hundred New York Social service agencies; even Women Helping Women.

I'm just amazed that all of the Socialist teachings haven't conveyed any common sense.

I can hear Ayn Rand's tongue clicking from the grave.

I wonder how this deadbeat will inflict punishment when she gets back on her feet.

She can't apply for welfare? Funny that this came from a socialist newspaper. I smell an "it's all Bush's fault" in there somewhere ;-)

It's damn near impossible to evict someone in NYC. Takes many years and many court battles...

>>>I have always supported myself by working in nightclub industries as a promoter and makeup artist...when I was about five-and-a-half months pregnant, I could no longer work in the nightclub industry...<<<

Help me out here. I can't see why pregnancy (except maybe at the very end) would prevent someone from working in the "nightclub industries" as a promoter or makeup artist. Am I missing something?

>>>I cry every night because I have no support.<<<

Gee, maybe she should have thought about this issue BEFORE schtupping the baby's sperm donor, who seems to be MIA here!

She wants taxpayers/landlord/charities to support her in the style to which she is accustomed with no consequences for her own actions. She's going to have to move out of the $1100/month apt so the charities can help her.

Ain't life a bear!

Oh and blame it on the war. Geesh! You made your bed now lay in it, or get out of it and get a job, get a cheaper place to live, and find that baby's daddy and make him pay or give that child up for adoption and get on with it. Quit your bitching about no help form those of us who work our butts off to feed and clothe our families.

Typical Liberal American female looking for a free lunch and takes no responsibility for the shape she is in. She wants a handout. Where is her family? Where is her "significant other"? Why is her rent so high and she doesn't have health insurance or an emergency fund? Where is her church? This sounds so bogus but is probably par for the course.

She's asking everyone to help but the father. Are they both unemployed?

She may not know who or where3 he is. Just another woman who thinks the world owes her a living, a job, and an apartment "in a decent New York City neighborhood."

Somebody wake me when a genuine victim is identified.
