I need some help debating these America hating leftists at the Air America forum. Here's a post from one poor bastard that says that we Americans are evil and we deserse everything that we get and that the rest of the world should crank up the hatred against America. I am trying to debate them rationally but they are incapable of seeing anything good about America or the American people. Time to call in the reserves. Oooohrahhh!

Thinking people (intellect before emotion) get sucked into these arguments all the time. Your adversaries are not rational thinkers, they are emotional ranters.

Your net effect is trying to swat flies with a shotgun.

They are insignificant, treat them that way.

Look, you and they come at things from entirely different prospectives. You would need to understand their underlying assumptions (premises) before you "debate" them. If one accepts their premises, one might accept their conclusions. They will cling fanatically to their unexamined premises, so it's useless to "debate" them. The reason they hate Rush and Ann, is that they beat liberals at their own game, rather than engage in a rational examination of facts, choices and alternatives, they just ridicule and belittle them.

As long as you try to debate them you lose. No sooner do you run one of their crackpot ideas to ground, than they change the subject or introduce new and astonishing facts to bolster their arguments. If it weren't for the internet Micheal Bellesiles would be teaching "history" at Emory today.

And if you do manage to catch them in a glaring contradiction or absurdity, they go nuclear and call you a "racist", "nazi" or some other epithet. The "debate" shifts from their crackpot ideas to an ad hominem attack on your character.

(I have found that when people attack Israel, if I say "Your are right. It ist da Joos vats to blame." they give me wide berth. BTW, I'm like totally WASP.)

See, that's your first mistake. To accomodate rational debate, one needs reason. They'll see your rational argument, raise you feelings and emotion, then steal the pot while you're still sputtering.
