What do about our bear problem?
none ^ | tonight | me

My wife (repo girl) and I live in a nice woody gated community Longwood, Fl. According to the security here, it is a nature preserve. Due to the hurricanes, the bears in the area have migrated to the more populated areas. Now they are being more than nuicences, getting into the trash and even going after my neighbor. I had a personal one on one with the mama bear while I was walking my 90 lb rottie named Ursa. Luckily, neither ura nor I whetted the bear's appetite. I consider myself and Ursa lucky that we didn't suddenly into a roasted chicken to the hungry bear like the old droopy cartoons.

In short my questions are:
1) What can we do to 'get rid off the bears' in our area
2) or at least ward them off?
3) Does the pepper spray work?
4) Am I in serious danger when I walk my dog at night?
5) Is it possible that the bears will get the smart idea to come into the house? (one of them tried to break into my neighbors garage)

Noise is a LOT better than a pellet gun; the message the bear will get after one of those is "kill the shooter".
One more thing to add to the good advice elsewhere on the thread; ALWAYS, but ALWAYS leave the bear a clear way out (don't corner it).

Weeeeelllllll yer not gonna like my answer. At our fly in camp to an island near kodiak we stayed at a "bed and breakfast" style structure that had been built up from an old fishery. The crapper was still rustic to say the least and near the door was about three or four of the oldest ugliest , rusted up 12 gauge pump guns ranging from old model 12's to the Mossburgs and 870's.

The exterior of the firearms was either rusted or spray painted with rustoleium. But they functioned flawless. When one went out fishing or just to the outhouse ya took one of the "working" camp shotguns. First round from the magazine tube was a number 9 bird shot which we were "instructed by the local guide" to put down just in front of the bears paws if s/he did'nt want to leave ya once s/he knew ya weren't food per se..... Ya stung the bear in the tenderest part of their body. I never had to do such but it was a common practice to sting or dust the bear with a very light Number 9 birdshot.

Of course the rest of the rounds were slugs.......:o)

Stay safe !

Too easy to just tell ya to apply the three S rule.....

Federal game preserve or not bears that break the rules are punished just as a third time offending criminal. They'll be captured and taken to a section of the preserve . If it's a small preserve then Mr Bear will be back in short time. The Wildlife Weenies in your area will give ya all the answers and help but if or when they threaten you not to do anything just hang up as ya have loser liberal socialists who put the critters life above that of a human making them lower than whaleshit.

If an or when ya have to take action yourself remember that ohhhh I hit a poor bear with my "truck" is much easier to explain than I had to shoot the bear with my new laser aimed, super titanium, cor bon fed monster magnum I got for just such a killin event per se.......

But until then I'd carry if such is an option. Add a whistle or airhorn to your pocket and let Ursa Minor handle yer Ursa Major if it comes to such of pup or people food for the bear.

Just my opinion per se....

.44 Mag. with semi jacketed hollow points. Minimum.
Rifles are better. Big rifles are even better. Read somewhere that even a .30-06 is considered underpowered for bears.

I read just yesterday that historically, black bears kill way more people than the griz, proportionally.

Noise ?? I'll bet the neighbors will appreciate that!Never cornering a wild animal, period, is good advice! But when I said pellet gun I didn't some little weakling gun, these newer pellet guns are a lot more high powered and bears are by nature scared. If this gun can kill small animals, even a grounhog. I have know doubt it will chase a bear off. One, two or a dozen cracks on the rear end from one of these .177 cal pellet guns from a distance naturally, you wouldn't want to be standing out in the open like a deer caught in the head lights, where the bear could chase you down. You have to do this from a hidden position, the bear will get the message. I'm pretty sure bears don't like pain and this gun will put a hurting on a bear. These .177 cal pellet guns are like a step down from a .22 cal. It's not like those old Daisy BB guns. If your not allowed to kill the bears and the game wardens aren't doing anything about it. My first option would be to scare the crap out of it and the best way would be to shoot it with a .177 cal pellet gun, from a very hidden postion of course!

This method works, but don't get caught using it. Buy three sticks of dynamite, and about nine blasting caps (old fuse style percussion type), from your local terrorist. Insert three of the blasting caps into each stick of dynamite. To do this, use a wooden dowel a hair bigger than the caps, (NO METAL IS TO BE USED AROUND THE DYNAMITE!) to push through the center of the dynamite (it's about an eight inch long stick, so push it in seven inches) stick, you now have a hole big enough to load the caps into. Push each cap gently into place with the dowel so that they are evenly spaced in the dynamite.

Step two, grab a roll of electrician's tape and tape all three sticks together, side by side. Should be a nice compact package about eight inces long, and about three inches around. Your doing good.

Now cover the whole thing in syrup and bacon grease (syrup to attract the bar, bacon grease to ward off any islamic fundamentalists) so that it will look, and smell good to the bear. Place it somewhere that only the bear is going to find this delictable morsel (high up in the porch area is good) Now wait for the bear to do his bit - that is biting into the charge and loosing his head).

Now this is where it gets tricky. When the fireman, and EMT's, and police/SWAT team arrive, be standing out in the yard (away from the now-dead bear) cussing about the fact that terrorists are everywhere!!! If asked, you know nothing about why things happened the way they did! Meanwhile you solved the problem, and you'll have a story to tell the great great grandchildren, this needs to remain a secret for quite a while. Ooops, forgot, this is the internet.
