As you know, I have a new novel, titled NIGHT FALL, published by Warner Books on November 22, 2004.
Its been awhile since my last novel, UP COUNTRY, which was published in January 2002. I would have gotten NIGHT FALL finished sooner, but my dog ate the manuscript.
A few words about NIGHT FALL: The story features John Corey, NYPD, who was also the main character in PLUM ISLAND and THE LIONS GAME. The female protagonist is Kate Mayfield, FBI, who first appeared in THE LIONS GAME.
NIGHT FALL is based on a true incident: the crash of TWA Flight 800 off the coast of Long Island, New York on July 17, 1996. All 230 passengers and crew perished. The official cause of the crash was and remains a mechanical failure, which caused the center fuel tank to explode in flight.
There were, however, over two hundred eyewitnesses to the crash who swore they saw a streak of light perhaps a missile heading toward the aircraft right before it exploded.
Five years after the crash, John Corey and his wife Kate Mayfield decide to get to the truth.
The book opens with a flashback to the night of July 17, 1996 a couple are videotaping themselves having sex on the beach. As the camera rolls, a huge explosion lights up the sky. Have they inadvertently videotaped the explosion of TWA 800?
For those of you who dont want to read a steamy sex scene, you can go directly to Chapter Two. Its five yeas later to the day, and John Corey and Kate Mayfield are driving out to the beach to attend a memorial service for the victims of the crash.
Many people who have read an advance reading copy of NIGHT FALL reviewers, movie people, bookstore owners, people in the publishing and publicity industries have said this is my best book ever. And who am I to argue?
As soon as a book hits stores, readers ask, "What's Next?"
I am currently working on a novel, untitled, about an Islamic plot to detonate an atomic device in a major American city.
This plot has been used before, but not by me.
The main protagonist in this story is a new character, not yet named, who is a CIA agent. The CIA has gotten some bad raps over the last few decades, in the media, movies, and in fiction, so I thought it was time to create a CIA hero of the type we used to read about in the early years of the Cold War. This guy is going to be a little like James Bond of British M-16 suave, cool, and sophisticated with a dry sense of humor.
If this isnt working out for me, Ill let you know.
Already been done.
I've loved DeMille's books since I picked up "By the Rivers of Babylon" at a flea market back in the 80s.
Nightfall is the name of a famous story by Issac Asimov. You might want to come up with another title. ( The fog of Midnight? )
