THE UNITED WAY/MY OPINION BY Steve Newton

Well, after reading information on the Free Republic from some of my far more learned colleagues, I decided to look up information on the United Way myself. As everyone probably knows, I never express a political opinion outright. However, when I was young I worked at an establishment who REQUIRED you to sign up for the United Way BEFORE you were employed. So I have a vested interest in this discussion.

You know

I'm really starting to believe that these people speak with forked tongue. Thank God we can get our news from a patriotic blog.

Maybe the news media should take note.

Don't forget that between 10 and 20 percent of your donation goes to pay for United Way's staff, their commercials trying to absolve themselves of scandal, etc.

A 30-second spot during any given Sunday NFL game on Fox or CBS costs around $350,000. This coming Sunday, count how many UW ads are shoved in your face during a single game.

Even if all that ad time is "donated," there are massive tax writeoffs going on.

"Unless, of course, their boss made it a condition of employment..."

Coercion is not limited to employers. The United Way recruits leading figures in each industry, trade, and profession to squeeze money out of others in that industry.

A judge up for reelection needs free publicity as a United Fund major volunteer, so he is named the volunteer for the legal profession.

The judge calls all the law firms in town and tells them how much he expects them to contribute and what time his clerk will drop by to pick up their check.

A hospital chief of staff surgeon calls all the MDs, clinics, labs, suppliers, HMOs, insurance companies, food suppliers, ambulance companies, uniform companies, security firms, electrical maintenance firms etc... and tells them how much they will contribute.

The amount is always kept low enough that no one can afford to say no. Some small businesses are forced to contribute multiple times.

I gave up giving to United Way when I found out what they supported. It was about the time when we lived in Maryland that the Maryland United Way got ripped off big time and the authorities did little or nothing about it. Thinking about it, why should I give to United Way and let some corporation take credit for my donation. If I give, I want the full credit.

The United Way also cut the Salvation Army (a Christian charity) contributions in half.

From a recent news article: http://www.phillyburbs.com/pb-dyn/news/111-09032004-359749.html Salvation Army explains breakup
By ELIZABETH FISHER
Bucks County Courier Times

The Salvation Army of Bucks County has struck out on its own to raise money for its programs after what it calls a painful, but amicable, parting with the United Way of Bucks County.

Stung by drastic cuts in United Way funding, The Salvation Army's advisory board unanimously decided recently to ramp up its own fund-raising programs for its disaster work and youth activities.

At a press conference Thursday, Salvation Army officials outlined their reasons.

United Way cut The Salvation Army's share of funding from the $85,000 it received in 2003 to $45,000 for this fiscal year. As a member agency, The Salvation Army would be limited in the ways it could raise money from other sources.

From WIKIPEDIA:

YMCA and the Gay Community

Historically, before the decriminalisation of homosexuality, some men often used the local "Y" as somewhere to meet other men--and often as a place to have anonymous sex. This practice has diminished as gay bathhouses have become more prevalent. The Village People's blockbuster recording of the Disco Era, "YMCA" alludes to this.

The stuff you can find on the web...

Very true. Yet another reason why those of us who can choose, should choose not to.

Thanks for the work and for the post.
Several decades ago I worked for a bank that basically forced employees to give money to United Way every year. Man, I wish there was some way I could get that money back. It makes me sick to my stomach just thinking about it.

Not only do I refuse to contribute to UW, but I'm pleased to say that my employer won't even allow the UW rep into the workplace to present his propaganda. My policy and advice is that people should give directly to the charities of their choice, or to none at all if that's their inclination.

I just lately heard the term "Gay West" for the Florida Keys!

Oh, yeah... Key West if FLAMING! I was down there with a girlfriend (OK, I'm not a woman) back in Fed 2004. About 1/4 of the shops in Key West have their "rainbow" flags out. Some are strictly about promoting homosexuality.

Gladly I was staying in Key Largo, up near the mainland. I will never stay in Key West. I'll drive there, maybe use the bathrooms - lockable only :), but never stay there. I don't want to help promote the homosexual choice of lifestyle by supporting those businesses.

UW is not a charity. It is a money laundering scheme.

The Bible says bring your tithes and offerings into the(God's)storehouse!

It does not say the United Way or any other organization, no mincing of words there!

But in some cases where the storehouse is used as a slush fund to protect some pedifile "men of the cloth" and if it were my tithes, gifts or other offerings I would make sure there is a complete accounting for each dime or this support would be removed from this "storehouse" immediately and without discussion or a second or third or fourth......chance and never to be resumed for that organization!

There are some gatherers who are arrogant and think they are equal with God and change the rules to suit their political and personal needs rather than the needs of deserving people for which the contents of the storehouse were devinely intended!
