The Perspective of a Zen Pagan

Many people believe that religion, morals, ethics, etc... was the defining story of the 2004 election. This election wasn't about specific policy issues they argue; but it was about a broader feeling of trusting one candidate over the other on the issues or morality and religious ethics. Some of these people will go so far as to say that Republican victory on November 2nd was a mandate for religion more than a mandate for the President and his party. They suggest that the democrats lost because they just didn't deal with the issue of religion very well... or at least not as well as the Republicans did.

The "moral values" indicated by 22% of voters as the top issue are not specific to any religion. They simply have to do with integrity, with character, and with what most Americans in the middle consider normalcy. The Democrats lack all three: intergity, character, and normalcy.

The election was not about "religion." But it WAS about common sense, and about the basic morality which is common to all religions and most ethical systems. Don't lie, cheat, steal, murder -- you know the drill. See below. It's about values, not stoplights. Don't be misled by the title.

But you won’t find anyone who attends church twice a week who will say: “yeah, I go twice a week… but I really should cut down.”

We sometimes forget that religion and morals are NOT mutually exclusive. This election was a mandate on honesty, morals and character. Something that the Democrats(& MSM) have given up in the pursuit of power. All there lies and perversions of the truth simply backfired. My faith in the american people to regognize the truth has been 52% restored.

I agree. The Bush vote, I believe, came from the great national well of the "Laws of Nature and of Nature's God" stated in the Declaration of Independence. Our American individuality is expressed in this collective morality. The Democrats "lack of integrity, character and normalcy" is the whiff of the corrupt European culture that attracts the Democrats.

I completely agree. Well said. They are values at the root of our American society, from the founding. They may be more informed by what we now call 'Judeo-Christian" teaching, but they are not so much religious values, and truly classical American values.

I like what you said too. Fresh truth put into words.

On a tangent note, I finally realized the other day why all the Ds are at port and coastal cities. They *are* trying to exit the country. They just need a little more encouragement.
