I just got this, this morning. Thought some of you might be interested.
They talk alot about OPSEC (operational security) here, you can find all you want about what's going to happen if you just have time to look for it.
Marines are gearing up for major offensives to take back 2 strong holds, F & R. Please keep these guys in your prayers...they are so young! They say "sir" to me...guess it's the gray hair..(lol)
Been raining off and on for the past 2 days...nothing like what you get back there..here it's overcast all day/night....a few showers pass thru, lasts about a minute or 2..it's more like a few drops...then a little later, same thing..then in the morning about 0400 a good shower comes...it rains enough to "settle the dust"...then it's back to the above shower scenario. Strange weather here! Wind has been blowing all day too, today..probably about 15 mph sustained. Luckily the ground is wet....the dust stays settled by the shower activity, otherwise, we'd have one heck of a dust/sand storm.
Temps are cooler now. 50's at night....feels like 90 during the day.....
The powderery dirt is like red-clay mud when it gets the slightest bit wet....sticks to everything...imagine what our hooch look likes with 20 guys.....there's only 2 of us that will sweep the floor or dump the trash...go figure. Like living in a barn....yes, they won;t shut the door when they go in or out either. Pretty funny sometimes.....
Oh! lots of people are getting flu like stomach virus.....medical thinks it's because the water we use for showers comes right out of the Euphrates....and guess what..it's not being treated. Supposedly, the Euphrates has some parasite (the name is as long as my arm) that gets into your bloodstream..makes it's way to your intestines, then proceeds to "wreak havoc".....hopefully it's just the food at the chow hall that's making them sick. Too much info? Sorry! Just another day in paradise!!! (lol)
I'm pretty tired......not sleeping very well here lately....several other guys aren't either...not sure what's up with that. Hard to stay "alert" in that condition. At least the heat has given us a break...it's almost bearable now wearing all the battle gear.
Let's see....local news: out of 49 Iraqi Police Recruits, here on base, where they have the academy..they fired 35, arrested 14 as they had direct ties to the Muhajadeen...several other "programs" have been plaqued with this problem too, including some of the local contractors that were hired to work on base. Talk about sleeping with the enemy...guess we didn;t learn anything from Vietnam!
Todays the election. Hope you all had a chance to vote. We sent our absentee ballets in; hopefully they'll make it in time...we heard they are giving an 8-day extension to the military. Everybody I talk to has voted for Bush. Seems there's some concern that if Kerry wins....in an effort to keep his campaign promise of "pulling out" of Iraq.....he'll put a halt to troop rotation and extend those of us that are already in country. I hope that doesn't happen. That would be a nightmare.
Time's up....:( Take care Thanks for your thoughts and prayers God Bless Larry
Thank you VERY much for posting this. God Bless all of them.
Stay safe my friend, you all are in our thoughts and prayers...God Bless you all, and God Bless America!
Thanks for posting this letter. Bless you, Larry, and your fellow soldiers. May God have mercy on our country and provide us with a strong man of faith to be our leader. Godspeed to the military ballots--praying they arrive on time AND WILL BE COUNTED.
I should have filled out the headers a little better.
I'm not in Iraq...my bra Larry is.
But your thanks are still well-taken, and very much appreciated
