Presidential Candidate section of the Michigan Absentee ballot (UPDATE: No hoax, small exposure

I'm posting this because I feel it should be seen, and because I know many people here are going to vote absentee for this upcoming election.

Here is a picture of Presidential Candidate section of the Michigan Absentee ballot, and if you take a look, you might notice something VERY wrong.

>

Now, if you look at that, notice how the arrows on the presidential candidates are not aligned....an arrow is left over at the end (pointing to the "Congressional" header), and Bush's name has no arrow. It would appear that the arrows are misaligned by having been moved too far downward.

Provided that you vote for the first arrow (next to Kerry), could this potentially mean that, because the arrows seem to be moved downward, that the arrow next to Kerry's name would actually be a vote for Bush? That someone who doesn't notice this and votes for Kerry would have their vote counted for Bush/Cheney?

To anyone else who has gotten an absentee ballot, is yours the same? Because if it is, this is very serious, and needs to be reported to the County Clerk's/whatever office. Just though I'd share.

Can you vote "straight party" (Republican) and substitute vote "Kerry-Edwards" for a single race (President)?

The nature of this type of a trick is to toss out votes that have already been cast and to call into question the results of those who vote at a later date.

If someone votes absentee, how certain are they to get the word (say overseas) that they need to vote again?

Texas (at least Houston) allows nicknames on the ballot. At times, soundalike candidate names will even include a "nickname" to make it seem closer to the other guy. Typically this is done in the primaries but some adopt nicknames to sound like famous people (of fact and fiction).

DailyKos is a leftist site.
I would believe anything they said in regards to ballot corrections.

That is the intent.
Bush would have to file suit (and rightfully so) that his name was on the ballot. This gives the DNC attorneys a chance to jump ugly that Bush is suing to "steal" an election again for a lousy 69 votes.
This was no mistake.

It looks to me as though Bush is not really on the ballot.

If someone filled in the arrow next to Kerry's name, the vote would be for Bush. Bad stuff.

I see the problem here.
The arrows were printed one space down.
Look at the bottom arrow - it doesn't point to anything but the header for Congressional races.
A vote for Kerry Edwards is actually a vote for Bush/Cheney.
This is also very bad because it gives the DNC an excuse to sue and review all the ballots - even the ones that miraculously appear in order to steal Michigan.

Hmmmm. You are right.
How do we know these are true absentee ballots and not fakes sent out by evildoers?

Read mine further down.
This sets up lawsuits on either side, and if the DNC gets to hand review all of the ballots for intent, then they have a chance to do a mass dumps of ballots they have in the purses.
This isn't good - this is "intent of the voter" crap.

There is no such thing as a "small number of ballets." We're talking votes that affect the Electoral College! It's a winner-take-all, issue! And to answer another person's question about the ballot being creased: the "crease" wouldn't cause the arrow's to be totally misplaced. WHO IN THE WORLD PROOFED THE ABSENTEE BALLOTS IN THOSE COUNTIES??? If a person waits until the time to cast the vote in November, it will be too late; people will be robbed of their votes. If the DUmmies can't cheat with voter fraud, they'll use fraudulent ballots. That simple, folks.

so are you saying the democrats wanted to help kerry by taking bush off but may have wound up helping bush? because more people would vote for kerry than the third guy.

Except that any of the defective ballots are going to get recounted. So the people who voted for Kerry will get counted for Kerry; those who voted for Bush, well, since they didn't validly mark their ballot that's just too bad.

Well, I would hope that any reasonable effort to draw an arrow for Bush would get counted, but I wouldn't count on it.

I believe that you are incorrect. The scanner looks for marks at positions relative to the edges of the ballot. Since there is no "arrow" where there should be, Bush could get no votes

Punched-card systems often use absolute positioning, but optical systems very seldom do. Examine a lottery playslip sometime and look at the edges; you'll notice that one or both of the long edges will have narrow black stripes which run parallel to the short edge; each stripe will line up with a row of ovals. At one or both ends of the slip, you'll see a pattern of black stripes which also run parallel to the short edge; this pattern is used to identify the type and orientation of the playslip.

Using markers in such a fashion makes the equipment faster and more reliable. Although it is imperative that the red and black print layers be aligned with each other, it need not be very well aligned with the cutting of the forms (I would suspect that the playslips are printed on a continuous web and then cut).

Looking at the ballot form, it would appear very likely that the rightmost solid portion of the arrow is used as an alignment marker. A scanner might notice that the markers were exceptionally far from where they 'should be', but it very well might not.

Seems to me that it's the Kerryites that are going to be pissed about this. There are 8 options and 8 arrows, the arrow s are just much lower than the candidate they are intended for. So if the 1st arrow corresponds to B/C, then a Kerryite using the arrow next to Kerry/Edwards will be unintentionally voting for Bush.
