Rough Draft...
My Sandmen ^ | 09.30.04 | Mr.Atos

The trap has been set for tonight’s debate. With the aid of the mainstream media, and an old fiend by the name of Rather at CBS, Democrats think they have President Bush set up perfectly for John Kerry’s sucker punch. The inquisition will be, “ Mr. President, can you assure the parent’s of America here and now that there will not be a military draft in your second term?” Of course, as an honorable Man and responsible Executive, the President can NOT say ‘No’. The Democrat’s key issue will be christened, complete with a positive confirmation from Bush, which will be headlined and pontificatedp on every medium of partisan journalism. Five weeks of talking points and spin will be handed to the Democrats by 60 minutes aided by PBS moderator, Jim Lehrer, with which to bludgeon Bush and convert enough ‘undecided votes’ to settle this election in Kerry’s favor. The October Surprise is at hand on the eve of expectation.

All he has to say is. "There will only be a draft if it is pursued by Fritz Hollings and Charlie Rangel. You'll have to ask them, it's their bill."

Of course, as an honorable Man and responsible Executive, the President can NOT say ‘No’.

On the contrary, he can say "Yes, and I will veto any such bill the Democrats get through Congress calling for such an action."

Nice analysis.

If asked, Bush should just uneqivocably say "There will be no draft. Next question."

But, can he actually say that? Ideally, a drafted fighting force is illconceived at best. Morally, the concept is reprehensible to a free people. But, he cannot paint himself into that corner in a time of crisis, uncertain of future events and enemies. I agree that 'Yes' is the wise answer. But, can he, as the President (not simply President #43) make that promise? His responsibility to the Nation would seem to forbid it. That is the nature of the conundrum and the trap, is it not?

Oh well, I would say that after the debate last night this is all moot anyway...

I think so! But, Lehrer came awefully close to the question when asking Kerry about his, 'How do you ask a man to die for a mistake...'(paraphrase) comments to Congress. I thought that might have been the set-up.

Thank you for your comments, btw.

I posted an addendum this morning...

10.01.04 - Addendum: The first debate came and went with no surprise! So was the draft issue sapped by the exposure? ... or simply never a relevant issue at this time for Kerry's public campaign? We shall see. There are two more debates and 5 more weeks of pounding by the mainstream media. And despite the gagging analyses of the punditry, President Bush delivered a tremendous performance. Hugh Hewitt gets it right. It was simple, clear, firm, and consistent and despite the post-debate polls and spin, the President's message was as effective as Coca-Cola's... "It's the Real Thing."
