It's a start. Whether they will be able to wrest control of Islam from the sand Nazis is another question. I doubt it, given the long-established doctrines of Islam, the sand Nazis have their theology more correct.

Many here will say it does not. However, consider how unimaginable this would have been just a short while ago. People in the Islamic world may be deceived but they are not stupid. They, like those under communist rule, they are seeing through the propaganda. Its not earth shattering but it is a beginning.

As I e-mailed them: Hopefully, this is a beginning. Time will tell.

Maybe this is the start of an Islamic Reformation. We'll see.

Muslims are such pikers. If it weren't for Turkey, Pakistan, and Indonesia, they wouldn't even make the list. Heck, Mexico's almost caught up to them.

They can apologize all they want, but they've got a lot of work to do if they want to beat the socialists.

This ping list is not author-specific for articles I'd like to share. Some for perfect moral clarity, some for provocative thoughts; or simply interesting articles I'd hate to miss myself. (I don't have to agree with the author 100% to feel the need to share an article.) I will try not to abuse the ping list and not to annoy you too much, but on some days there is more of good stuff that is worthy attention. I keep separate PING lists for my favorite authors Victor Davis Hanson, Lee Harris, David Warren, Orson Scott Card. You are welcome in or out, just freepmail me (and note which PING list you are talking about).

"Actually, Muslims like this guy don't need to apologize - HE didn't do any of this."

After reading another post by Zulu on another thread, I agree with him. Muslims like this guy don't need to apologize. Making this group apologise for the actions of other muslims is akin to white americans today apologise for slavery of the past.

I want the Jihadist to put down their bombs and apologise

Islamists' Favorite Republican
By Chris Arabia
FrontPageMagazine.com | October 27, 2003

Kamal Nawash has big aspirations: Nawash is running as a Republican in his effort to become the first Muslim to win election to Virginia’s General Assembly. Unfortunately, he also defends alleged terrorists, advocates against heightened Homeland Security initiatives and supports anti-Israel and extreme Islamist positions and personalities. Incredibly, he also presents himself as a moderate political voice. To reach an informed decision, voters in the Old Dominion’s 31st District should become familiar with a side of Nawash not found in his campaign literature.

Born in Bethlehem, Nawash is a lawyer who is emphasizing his immigrant success story and local issues while downplaying his extremist connections. After completing law school, Nawash moved to Washington, D.C. He soon became the legal advisor for the radical Arab-American Discrimination Committee, an organization that reflexively opposes the War on Terror and Israel and obscures the culpability of terrorists in a fog of moral equivalence about murder’s dreaded “root causes.”

Consistent with his radical background, Nawash has served as counsel for Abdul Rahman al-Amoudi, who authorities arrested in September for alleged illegal financial dealings with, and travel to, Libya. “Court documents filed late last Wednesday night [October 22] claim al-Amoudi has provided ‘financial support to Hamas’ and ‘financial support to fronts for al-Qaida,’” according to NBC News. Describing Al-Amoudi after his arrest, Nawash said, “He is just a liberal Muslim, who wants more Muslims to be involved in the U.S. military and politics to be part of America.” The kinds of people that al-Amoudi might want to involve in the U.S. military probably wouldn’t do much to increase the security of Nawash’s potential constituents.

Nawash also recently returned $10,000 in campaign contributions from al-Amoudi and his wife. He shares the distinction of repudiating al-Amoudi donations with George W. Bush and Hillary Clinton, who rescinded their acceptances after al-Amoudi endorsed the terrorist Hamas group at a rally not far from the White House. Because of Nawash’s intimate association with al-Amoudi, Nawash cannot plausibly argue that he “didn’t know,” as could Bush and Clinton. Prior to his arrest, Al-Amoudi penned a fundraising letter on Nawash’s behalf.

Conservative stalwart and head of Americans for Tax Reform Grover Norquist has backed Nawash and planned to host a Nawash fundraiser in his home. Interest in Nawash might stem from Norquist’s alliance with al-Amoudi. Norquist is al-Amoudi’s registered lobbyist and has allegedly used his GOP connections to facilitate White House access for extreme Islamists. In addition to accepting substantial seed money from al-Amoudi when he co-founded the Islamic Institute, Norquist has forged relationships with characters such as alleged Islamic Jihad fundraiser Sami Al-Arian, who is in federal custody. Pointed criticism of Norquist has led to internal conservative strife; Norquist has responded primarily by playing the race card. Interestingly, Norquist has lobbied against anti-terror legislation.

Despite his record of extremism, Nawash has also secured the endorsement of U.S. Senator John Warner, R-VA, the Armed Services Committee Chairman. According to Nawash’s campaign website, Warner has stated, “Only Kamal has the experience to understand the needs of all the people in the district. I will work closely with Kamal to bring important services to the community…Please join me in supporting Kamal by voting for him on November 4th.”

Hopefully, Warner’s pledge to “work closely” with Nawash would not extend to Armed Services business. In any event, Virginians might question Warner’s evident ignorance or approval of Nawash and his extremist ideas.

Besides the Norquist and Warner recommendations, Nawash has won the endorsement of the Islamic Political Party of America, the self-described “first Islamic political party in America.” IPPA “solemnly declare[s] that the foundation of [its] political positions and moving principles of our political activity is our full submission to the will of Allah.” Dr. Daniel Pipes, a noted watchdog of Islamist extremism, notes that the IPPA could become the American equivalent of the Islamic Party of Britain, which “is a major factor in UK Muslim politics.”

As one might expect, Dr. Pipes has followed the Nawash candidacy with some interest. Pipes’ website provides insightful information and commentary.

In an article for al-Hewar, Nawash contended that U.S.-designated Palestinian terrorist groups are guilty of little more than being “groups who have differing views than the U.S. government concerning the Arab-Israeli peace process.” His statement is literally true—the U.S. opposes the terror cult of suicide bombing, for instance—but absurd in its implication that terror is nothing more than another political position, akin to being pro-gun control.

Candidate Nawash expressed doubts about the very concept of terrorism, reciting the fatigued canard that “any liberation group that takes up arms against a repressive regime …could receive a terrorist label” depending on U.S. political whims. As an example of such a group, Nawash offered “those colonial soldiers” who fought the Revolutionary War. Some archivist must have misplaced the treatise in which George Washington commanded his followers to blow themselves up in the town square.

Given his ambivalence about the very existence of terrorism, Nawash condemned the 1996 Anti-Terrorism Act; designation of foreign terrorist organizations, in Nawash’s view, constitutes the “criminalization of international fundraising and humanitarian aid.” He complained that the law distinguishes between aiding designated terrorist groups and contributing to organizations such as the Democratic and Republican parties, or Likud and Labor. Nawash believes himself fit to govern but cannot understand why aiding Hamas and the PFLP (worst remembered for the September 1970 hijackings) transcends mere political advocacy.

Nawash also attempted to make a legal case that the 1996 Act is invalid—without providing footnotes, sources, or any citations—and claimed that many acclaimed legal luminaries expressed “shock” because the 1996 Act is so repressive without providing names. He also asserted that the 1996 Act “conveniently” excuses “Israel, which has routinely engaged in state sponsored terrorism.”

Responding to the National Commission on Terrorism’s 2000 report (which featured the World Trade Center on its cover), Nawash blasted common sense proposals such as keeping better track of international students in the U.S.—a measure that might have prevented 9/11. Nawash donned the robes of self-righteousness in condemning reliance on informants of questionable character—even though the use of such individuals can sometimes be the only available avenue for infiltrating cabals such as al-Qaeda. Showing a marked disregard for safety, Nawash argues against bolstering national security by ensuring that foreign students comply with applicable regulations.

In his role as ADC Legal Director, Nawash has confirmed the group’s interest in suing pro-Israeli organizations. He cautioned, however, that ADC lacks the resources to “initiate cases like those initiated by the pro-Israeli organizations” unless ADC terminates its human services programs. The aspiring State Senator hopes that ADC will soon have the wherewithal to attack Israel in the courts.

Bolstering suspicions that he is a Republican in Name Only, Nawash spoke in May of 2003, at the “Muslim Solidarity Day for Peace and Justice.” Misuse of the terms “Peace” and “Justice” recall Communist front groups. Indeed, the Pyongyang-friendly International ANSWER promoted the event.

During an NPR interview in 2000, Nawash rationalized the abhorrent practice of honor killings, which typically involve the murder of females who transgress stifling social and family boundaries: “While [the killers] think what they're doing is bad, they don't see that what they're doing is similar to a killer who kills, for example, for financial gain or anything, because these people who do honor killings could be the most moral of people,” the decision to slaughter a family member notwithstanding.

The oblivious media have naturally sung Nawash’s praises. The Sun-Gazette of northern Virginia cheerfully reported, “Candidate Seeks to Make History” by becoming first Muslim in the General Assembly. Nawash views his campaign as a grand opportunity for Muslims and Arab-Americans “to experience the American political process first-hand” by assisting his campaign. Hopefully, such persons will opt to assist candidates who do not hold so many views fundamentally opposed to American values.

Focusing his campaign on local issues, Nawash asserts, “I think that my commitment to getting things done for all my constituents will allow me to attract voters from all parties and energize first-time voters to vote for me.” Nawash is reaching out to the Hispanic community. His campaign site contains an announcement in Spanish and he has garnered Spanish-language coverage of his overtures to the Salvadoran community.

On June 29, 2003, The Washington Times published an approving profile of Nawash that detailed his stated dedication to fostering mutual understanding, his interest in public transportation and education, and his admiration for Ronald Reagan. The article neglected to examine Nawash’s terror-sympathetic extremism.

Close associate and ADC spokeman Hussein Ibish, himself an extremist with alarming beliefs, worried that Nawash faces special obstacles in his quest to increase Arab-American political participation. “He's going to face doubts about the loyalty of Arab-Americans to the United States. That's a fundamental element of public service,” said Ibish. “When [voters] get to know him, they'll realize he's an extremely patriotic and dedicated American.”

Unfortunately, when voters get to know the whole Nawash story, they are likely to doubt his sincerity and personal probity; Nawash’s extremism and work with the ADC justify doubts about his fitness for office. Even worse, his radical beliefs and misleading campaign will undermine the efforts of millions of non-extremist Muslims and Arab-Americans to participate more fully in the political system. While the people of Virginia’s 31st Senatorial District have every right to elect Nawash, they should have the benefit of assessing his record in its entirety before entering the voting booth.
