After the documents were released by CBS, the Bush administration distributed them to reporters without comment.
Why would they do such a thing? Why would they further disseminate documents to the Washington press corps that are critical of President Bush, especially when the documents are readily available on the internet?
The answer is simple: The White House's internal analysis revealed that the documents were forgeries. They wanted the word to get out, but a claim of forgery would make them look like crybabies and conspiracy theorists. Instead, they simply distributed the memos without comment, knowing that someone would realize they were forgeries and run with the story.
OK, here's my theory. Hillary is behind this whole thing.
What's your source on that?
I know that CBS faxed them to the WH.
President Bush is class act all the way and this is just another demonstration of that fact.
The WH promised the press they would release all documents to them. When they obtained from CBS what they thought were valid documents they released them.
You know, this isn't rocket science.
I believe it was the AP that reported that CBS sent the documents to the WH, and the WH gave them to reporters. Or something like that. Anyway, what is heartening about this is that it may imply that the WH also discovered they were forgeries.
They probably did it just to show they weren't hiding anything. Doesn't seem like much to me - why would they keep them?
Hmmm........I think you're digging a little too deep.
Note that the memo above refers to an address at 5000 Longmont but according to payroll records, Bush lived 2910 Westheimer Rd Apt 4. If they knew where to send his check, why didn't they know where he lived ?
Are these "damaging" and "serious" documents, and are the worst ones not suspected to be fraudulent? Colmes made those statements this evening.
Several news outlets got their copies from the White House, AP, CNN and more.
CBS sent them to the White House and the White House wanted all the media outlets to have it and distributed them out.
I agree I'll bet the White House was hiding some large smirks yesterday, I can't imagine they didn't realize they were forgeries.
Don't you love seeing Rather set-up and knocked down, I've been laughing all day.
True, true. Maybe, as someone else pointed out, I'm digging a little too deep. Maybe the WHite House simply wanted to make sure the press had all the documents on hand. They may have assumed these were legit and distributed them to the press to make sure everything is out there, which shows the class of this White House. My theory is more fun, but less probable.
This whole CBS pig trip is falling apart. Lt Gov Barnes' daughter was interviewed by Monica Crowley today as reported by Carl Limbacher and she says her dad is lying for political reasons. Also, the Lt Gov signed a deposition under oath in 1999 that he was never pressued by the Bushs. Now these docs are crap, the story is CBS and the old media, not the president. I've never been more proud to be a Republican and never more ashamed of fat Dan.
You misunderestimate this Whitehouse surely.
There are threads all about them you just need to do a search, but basicly all the documents CBS had look to be forgeries.
He couldn't have done it anyway. Bush went in the guard in 1968. Barns didn't become Lt. Governor until 1969.
One of the defenses of CBS I have seen in the MSM (I'm sorry I've seen so many stories I'm not sure where) is that the White House released the documents without denying their authenticity. Pretty lame IMHO since if CBS were correct about where they got these President Bush has never seen them.
The Bush White House is very, very good. They're light years ahead of the Democrats. The Bush team knows how to play them.
