Patriotism?...... What is it?(vainity)

What I would like to do is get an idea of what the common person thinks patriotism is. I maybe wrong but I think that with the media and all political parties claim their own forms of patriotism, the true mean may get lost. I also know that most People have their own definitions of Patriotism.

Below is a definition of Patriotism. (Thanks to our friends at Merrim-Webster)

Main Entry: pa·tri·ot·ism Pronunciation: 'pA-trE-&-"ti-z&m, chiefly British 'pa- Function: noun : love for or devotion to one's country

I know that my personal feelings about patriotism go beyond the simple definition. Do others see it differently? If you would care to leave your feelings on patriotism, I am intrested to get a feel of what others think. Debate encouraged. Attack discourage. Just a free exchange on an Idea that has a great impact on our country. Thanks!

I have been listening to the DNC convention so maybe this is a cheap shot but Patriotism should include placing your nations best interest ahead of your political parties best interest.
