Oh, BAD IDEA!
Rummy was doing his job.
People should keep in mind that the only ones howling for Rumsfeld's blood are the Democrats.
If they want it, it's a bad thing.

This apologizing bs has gotten completely out of hand. Did FDR apologize for carpet bombing those German city's and Truman apologize to the Japanese for dropping the big one and killing 200,000 civilians? The Rats must be high fiving all over the place. They are all a bunch of treasonist bass turds.

Don't be so glum. Thinks are not all that bad.
Bush is standing behind Rummy and:
Nervous Kerry to Dems: "Go Easy on Rumsfeld"; Repsonse: "Why are you trying to F**K me on this?"

John Kerry burned the midnight oil on the phone with Democrat members of the Senate Armed Services Committee last night. He pleaded with them to go lightly on Donald Rumsfeld when the Secretary of Defense appears before them today at around noon. Rumsfeld is scheduled to answer their questions about allegations of abuse by US soldiers against Iraqi prisoners and the ensuing investigation.
The photos of those alleged cases of abuse have enraged the Arab world. And Democrat bigs on the Armed Services Committee have called for Rumsfleds head.
But according to our source inside the Kerry campaign, John Kerry badly wants the issue to go away. Kerry fears the longer the issue stays in the news, the greater the likelihood his controversial accusations of war crimes committed by US soldiers in Vietnam including his own will become an ancillary issue in the campaign for President. The 9-11 Commission is already going to discredit Bush in their report. If we push things too far, there is bound to be a backlash, our source told us. Tonights cable news talk shows were proof. Virtually every one of them ran footage of John Kerry in 1971 trashing his fellow veterans and admitting atrocities.
Our source told us that the Democrat Senate Caucus had originally planned to rake Rumsfeld over the coals at todays hearing, but that Kerry wanted them to tone it down. Kerry had heated phone conversations with at least two key Democrats on the Armed Services Committee, demanding to know of one, Why are you trying to fk me on this?
No word yet on whether Kerry was successful in persuading his fellow Democrats to go easy on Rumsfeld or not. I guess well just have to stay tuned to the hearings.

What's more of an outrage: Rumsfeld apologizing to COngress, or the fact that Sadr is allowed to do as he pleases (on Fridays) so as not to offend any Muslims?

Hummm!
I just read this thread that says that Kerry doesn't want Rumsfield grilled because he's afraid his Vietnam issues and atrocities will be more in the forefront.
So is Rumsfield apology a way to put Kerry's Vietnam issues out to the public???

He has to apologize. NY Times is reporting on pictures of DEAD Iraqi prisoners who appeared to be mistreated. If Rumsfeld looks like he's hiding, he's out the door before the convention.
As much as we want it to go away, this won't. The whole thing is nauseating. We've lost a ton of leverage and Old Europe is rejoicing. This can't drag on.
To: kcvl
I have no problem if he apologizes as long as he fights.
To: kcvl
Rumsfeld might apologize FOR the troops who committed the bad behavior, but he has nothing to apologize for.
To: kcvl
Bush has made a practice of giving Democrats most of what they clamor for and invariably, Bush's magnaminity outclasses and stymies the tantrum throwing Dems.
Same thing will happen this time.
Rumsfeld will apologize, just as Bush did, but Democrats will not accept that (even though that's what they've been clamoring for). Dems will continue to rant and rave that it's not enough. They will look like sour faced 2 year olds. Kerry's starting to realize that this issue is taking ALL the attention away from him. He wants it to stop, but it's too juicy for the most rabid Dems to let go of it.
It will be okay. Wait and see.

While Rumsfeld did fail to call this event to the attention of the Commander in Chief, something Bush has already rebuked him for, he probably still owes Congress an apology.
For ultimately, the buck stops at his desk when any of our troops fail to do their duties properly. The US military deployment in Iraq was woefully inadequate, largely due to Rumsfeld's involvement going into the war, despite warnings from the military. And still ultimately, this war would not have dragged on had he not taken control of this debacle. With a voluntary military and a protracted incursion, we have put ourselves in a position where we are using Reserve and National Guard troops with inadequate training to deal with the situations they are encountering, as well as working with overpaid contractors who do not know anything about true service. They work for money, not for honor.
I am a veteran of Desert Storm. Friends in my company were responsible from prisoners of war held at Log Base Echo near Hafir Al Batin, and I know for a fact that no abuse occurred there.
