He's married to a Kennedy. Think of the support he could garner as a Democrat. He could have quit the Gop long ago and reaped the benefits. No evidence, he ever considered turning Dem.

Yes there is a reason.
If he were a Dem, he'd be competing primarily with Bustamonte for the sole Dem they want to put on the ballot.
This is less effective than running a Liberal on both Republican AND Democrat ballots.
